Compression percentage, does equal quality...?

Hi, i use DVD Shrink to compress my videos. Although, i rather do the re-authoring and copy only the main movie in order not to have to compress it.
Now, to some movies there is no way but to compress or use a DL DVD. My question is: if the compression says 95%, does it mean that i am losing 5% of the quality of the video? How does it work?
I used the search engine but so far i couldn't find anything!
Thanks!

If compression in 95% your losing a lot of quilty, not noticable but your just losing quilty. It tends to be noticable when you are watching secens with a whole bunch of action (ie Matrix, Police Story, Terminator). The best thing to do is copy the main movie only. With a DL DVD you don't need to compress the movie. Cause standard Movies are about 4.7 to 7gb. You may need to compress a little bit, but I recommend just turning compression off in DVD shrink.

Consider this as comparison: when DVD Shrins shows 100%, it means that it makes no compression, i.e. it doesn't change in any way the original movie.

When it shows 95%, DVD Shrink apply only a little amount of compression; at 90% the movie is compressed some more, and so on.

The resulting quality is related on many factors, mostly the bitrate of the original movie, the screen in which you play the movie (usually, also for the original movie a very large screen can show a bad image if the original movie is not in High Definition) and the personal ability to spot artifacts.

There is a huge subjectivity in resulting quality: some people are able to find also very fine artifacts, and other are not able to distinguish differences even with a huge compression.

Re: Compression percentage, does equal quality...?

Well, since i am seeing my videos with a projector, then i might do a test recording the same movie twice, one with 90% and another at 100%.
Thanks for the feedback!

Re: Compression percentage, does equal quality...?

fabiodovalle, hi there
I think geno888 explained it quite well.
There are other actions you can use with DVDShrink to decrease the amount of compression needed, and hopefully improve the quality of the resulting video.
First, if multiple languages are not absolutely necessary--choose only one.
If subtitles are not important, remove them all.
If the credits after the end of the movie are not important to you, you can cut them out(but I recommend watching the first few minutes of the credits before you make this decision because they sometimes contain interesting clips as well)
Some people think the credits are critical however.
One last very small thing, is to increase the default size for the compressed image used by DVDShrink. The default size is 4464 MBs. If you use quality DVD media and burn at moderate speeds you can increase this to anywhere from 4482 to 4489 MBs depending on the limit of the particular media type.
Any or all of these actions will reduce the amount of compression needed and hopefully improve the quality of the resulting video.(If the main movie is the only thing you really want in the end.)

Re: Compression percentage, does equal quality...?

Thanks uSerKey!
I already do these things, although i custom and record on 4340mb the most in order to avoid problems.
I might use the DVDFab split function for movies that are too big!
