Bugs with Nero 5.5.9.0

Hi everyboy,

Here is a message I have just sent to techsupport7@nero.com.

Could anybody:
-> Confirm that these bugs actually exists in all versions,
-> Send confirmation/infirmation to support,
-> Give opinion on the enhancement requests,
-> Give any tip/workaround?

Regards,

Jean-Dominique.

Dear Darrick,

Thanks for your answers.

This problem is now solved. The origin was, actually, the Adaptec plugin from Windows Media Player 7.0 (which was previously installed, then removed), plugin that was not properly uninstalled.

I was able to remove it by using MicroSoft RegClean (not available any more on MicroSoft Website) and RegCleaner (available at http://www.jv16.org).

I have created incidents on http://support.nero.com, but I have no news about them. I suppose they are lost and re-send them here under.

System: Window 98 SE, 96 Mb SD-RAM, bus 100 MHz, Packard-Bell Club 2500C, Celeron 500 with chipset i810.

IDE Bus:
  • Primary Master: Western Digital 40 Gb, with double boot (Windows & Linux RedHat 7.3), in UDMA-2 mode,
  • Primary Slave: Western Digital 1.6 Gb, for backup purpose, only available under Linux, in DMA-MW2 mode,
  • Secondary Master: Pioneer DVD-114, Firmware 2.06, in UDMA-2 mode,
  • Secondary Slave: LiteOn LTR-40125S, initially delivered with Firmware ZS0J, recently upgraded to ZS0K, in UDMA-2 mode.

Driver is: Intel Ultra-ATA Storage Driver 5.02.2001 (dated 2001/02/16). The 40 Gb disk is limited to UDMA-2, because the chipset does not support the UDMA-4 mode (probably due to cheap hardware components).
********* For more information, please refer to IDE_Report.txt ***************

Nero Software:
Initial release delivered with the CD-Burner: Nero 5.5.8.0 and inCD.
Current release (downloaded from Nero website): Nero 5.5.9.0, and inCD 3.31.0. French language.
********** For more information, please refer to the Nero History file *************

Now completly uninstalled: Adaptec Easy CD Creator 3.35c, French Language, used for a HP WD-WriterPlus 7200i now uninstalled, too.

Bug #1 (Major bug).
When creating a CD, for instance in UDF mode, the character code page allowed is not compliant with the Reference Books.
Duplication Steps:
  • Start Nero,
  • Request the creation of a new CD,
  • On the Label Tab, try the allowed characters for the various fields.
Results:
Despite the information provided in Appendix b, page 91 & 92,
  • Fields "System ID", "Editor", "Preparator" & "Application" only accept codepage "d" instead of codepage "a".
  • Fields "Copyright", "Summary" & "Bibliography" only accept codepage "d", instead of extended codepage "d" ("d" with "." and ";").

Bug #2 (Minor Bug).
When formatting a CD-RW with inCD, we are not supposed to use space, but we allowed not to follow this rule and the CD is properly formatted. See, hereunder, the allowance to enter special characters in the label field, and the result with Windows Explorer (R: Drive).
Duplication Steps:
  • Insert a blank CD-RW in the driver,
  • Request the CD Formatting from inCD,
  • In the Label Field, enter miscellaneous characters.
Results:
  • All characters are allowed, including spaces.
(screen copies with label like "X£ôë ßÐæZ")
Expected result:
  • the special characters should be detected, or the warning should be removed.

Bug #3 (Bug).
We cannot read an UDF CD on the second drive.
Duplication Steps:
  • Insert a formatted (by inCD) CD-RW in another drive on the same machine (here, the Q: DVD drive),
Results:
  • The CD is seen in normal mode, not in UDF mode. (First screen copies = Visibility from R: Drive, with inCD ; Then Visibilty from Q: Drive, inCD does not work).
Expected result:
  • inCD should manage the drive, maybe asking the user if the UDF visibilty is required or if the normal one is expected.

Bug #4 (Minor bug).
EasyWrite Reader, provided by inCD on the formatted CD-RW, cannot be installed on the computer.
Duplication Steps:
  • Insert a formatted (by inCD) CD-RW in another drive on the same machine (here, the Q: DVD drive),
  • Go to the Files folder,
  • Start the EasyWriteReader application.
Results:
  • An error message appears on the screen.
(here, screen copy showing that a dll is missing).
Expected result:
  • An information message should indicate that this software cannot be installed on the same machine than inCD.

Bug #5 (Major bug).
EasyWrite Reader, provided on the Nero Website, can be installed on the computer but leads to a unbootable machine.
Duplication Steps:
  • Install inCD on the computer,
  • Install EasyWrite on the same computer (I have received the message that the Adaptec plugin was still present, but no other warning message),
  • Reboot the machine as requested.
Results:
  • The system traps, with the following message: Exception 0E @ 0028:C161E259, in VxD SCSIPORT(01) + 7D9, called from 0028:C182FE74, in VxD scsi1hlp(03) + 774.
Expected result:
  • Either the software should not be installed, or it should work properly…

Bug #6 (Bug).
Nero does not detect when a file has been changed between the inclusion in the CD Description (compilation) and the CD Burning.
Duplication Steps:
  • Create a small text file with, for instance, 200 characters,
  • Include this file in a CD compilation (ISO one, for instance),
  • Do not burn the CD now, but save the compilation file,
  • Exit to the operating system and modify the text file, reducing the size to 180 characters,
  • Restart Nero, and reload the compilation file -> Message: Everything is OK, the files are not deleted or moved.
  • Burn the CD
Results:
  • The CD is not correct, because the file comparison detects that a file does not match,
  • On the CD, we have extra characters at the end of the files (probably recorded with 200 chars, instead of 180).
Expected result:
  • Either the software should detect that the file has been changed (and propose to accept the change or to exclude the file), or it should used the actual size of the file (and not the original one).

Enhancement request #1.
The red & yellow lines, showing the capacity of the disk, are hardly seeable. A big point should be added to clearly show if we are under or over the capacity of the disk. Can you tell me if I am over or under the yellow line, hereafter?
(here a screen copy showing the rule)
Expected behaviour:
  • In the status bar (the lower part of the screen), add a point (a big dot) reminding the status as follow:
  • If the total size is below the yellow line, the point is GREEN,
  • If the total size is over the yellow line, but it is acceptable if the CD is closed, the point is BLINKING YELLOW,
  • If the total size is over the yellow line, but bellow the red line, and cannot be manage even when closing the CD, the point is YELLOW,
  • If the total size is over the red line, but is acceptable if the CD is closed, the point is BLINKING RED,
  • If the total size is over the red line and cannot be managed even when closing the CD, the point is RED.

Enhancement request #2.
During the file comparison, after CD Burning, give the detailed list of files which do not match the original ones, with the reason (size, content, maybe dates). When you receive the message "391 files recorded, 390 matches, 1 mismatch", it is boring to check everything to see which one is not correct!
Expected behaviour:
  • Add a button "Detail" on the frame giving the comparison result, on which we can click to display the files comparison details. If possible, allow the user to save the result. Allow the user to check the detail even if everything is OK, in order to keep a proof that everything was correctly recorded and of what was actually recorded (give pathname of origin, size, date, pathname on CD, size, date, status).
Quote:
Enhancement request #3.
Allow the file comparison routine to be executed from the menu (not only when a CD has just been burnt). So, if we discover a problem on the CD, we can check with the compilation file if it was properly recorded or not (we cannot do it from the operating system, because the names can have been changed to comply with the CD format).

Best regards,

Jean-Dominique Delyon
