Authoring prog recommendation

Hi, guys.

I have a problem making a DVD from an avi and need a prog recommendation and this seems a good place to ask. I've done some searching here and not really got what i'm looking for (a lot of the terminology is above me). I'd be grateful for any help.

I need to make the relevant DVD files from this:

Ideally i need anamorphic 16:9, with the 23.976 framerate.

I've tried many programs (please don't suggest TMPGENC as for some reason it rejects this file!), but with minor success. WINAVI did the picture and ratio ok but the framerate was off

Again, any help will be more than welcome. Cheers.

Re: Authoring prog recommendation

Maybe TMPGENC refuses this file because of audio stream: it's not able to manage ac3 audio tracks. To use TMPGENC maybe you can try to split audio from video with VirtualDubMod, saving video and audio as separate files (use direct stream copy for video and save andio in uncompressed wav). Then TMPGENC will be able to convert avi in mpeg.
To author you can use TMPGENC DVD Author.
Try to take a look in this site: is more specific for video.

Thanks! I'll try that!

edit:

Re: Authoring prog recommendation

Try raising the DirectShow priority. Options -> Environmental Settings -> VFAPI plugins. Raise priority of DirectShow to +2.

And reinstall your XviD codec, apparently it's broken. Good luck.

Re: Authoring prog recommendation

OK, i managed to get TMPGENC to recognize the video, but i'm having trouble extracting an audio stream that it is happy with. As suggested, i'm using Virtualdubmod to get the audio stream but i don't know what i'm doing wrong.

Thanks for the help so far, guys.

Re: Authoring prog recommendation

File -> Open video file -> Streams -> Demux -> ("Name of Video") with .ac3 extension.

I'd encode video elementary stream only. And unless you want to wait a long time, use CQ, kinda like one-pass VBR, except file size is somewhat unpredictable. Quality is quite good. For that movie length, I'd use CQ 65 or thereabouts, depends somewhat on the particular movie.

When you have your elementary streams, use TMPGEnc's MPEG Tools to mux (multiplex) them together. That way you can check audio sync before you author the DVD.

And for goodness sake, don't do an NTSC -> PAL conversion. If you're in PAL-land, your player and TV should handle it fine. If you insist on framerate conversion, it's easier and better, IMO, to do it as AVI. Look here:

Good luck.

[EDIT] Oops, you stated you want to keep 23.97 FR. Never mind.

Re: Authoring prog recommendation

Try repairing the AC3 audio with BeSliced or AC3Fix. then try authoring again.

Look towards the end of the guide under "Problems". Good luck.

Re: Authoring prog recommendation

I use DVD-lab PRO for authoring mostly as TMPGEnc is very basic..
also DVDSANTA (encode and author) is a little more forgiving than TMPGEnc..
You could also try extracting the audio with ffmpeggui ...
