I am gonna wait for the review on this thing. So far the Hitachi 1TB drive with 32 meg of cache beat the raptor in most benchmarks, in raid and nonraid config

Will WindowsXP Pro recognize a 1TB hdd? I never had one, or even saw one in a PC.

I am not sure but Anandtech tested/reviewed the Hitachi 1TB drive in XP Pro SP2, so I guess it is supported

Yes! The really important thing about the rollout of more 1TB drives is that the prices on 500GB and 750GB drives will start to fall further. Black Friday may see some interesting deals on those this year.

u guys must have money to burn... cause i dont think it's wise to shell out that much for a hard drive thats gonna probably be half that price in not long.

i think around the 100 dollar mark (give or take maybe 10-20dollars) is the sweet spot in terms of storage/price ratio (aka price per GB)

i was unwise though at one time... i think i paid about 300 dollars for a 80GB hdd back around 2000-2001 area ... that was just stupid!

i think the best thing about this 1TB hard drive is (like negritude said) that the 500-750GB ones will become much cheaper

Reminds of me when I paid $900 for a 20MB ( not a typo 20 MegaByte) Xetec external HDD setup with host adapter back in the 80's for my C=64 BBS . Didn't seem stupid then tho

I was talking about the Seagate, but the WD would fit my criteria.

However, I just dont trust WD after two drives went bad after 3 years. Well, Seagate and Hitachi (cheaper) on the other hand is flawless. Just my experience.

Quite a few variables determine which direction to go in the HDD size vs. price debate. It really depends on how much HDD space one truly needs, the importance of the strored data, how the data is organized, the reliability of the drives being considered, and how much case space/cooling/PSU wattage one has to work with.

When the WD SE16 750GB was on sale for $180 about six weeks ago, the SE16 250GB version was selling for around $65. Buying three of those 250GB HDDs would have cost $15 more than the single 750GB drive, used almost 3x more power, produced almost 3x more heat, taken 3x the drive slots and required two extra SATA data and power cables.

If you add these hidden costs and inconveniences, combined with the additional performance and better construction of the WD 750GB AAKS model compared to the older WD 250GB KS model, the best decision is clear. (Based on the WD HDD models I was considering. There possibly could be better drives available.)

However, a single large drive is mainly a good match to your needs if you really need all that space and don't run a RAID setup. There are certainly situations where one could effectively reason that a number of smaller drives are a better match. But for my needs in editing/archiving large amounts of video, on a system that is usually running 16-20 hours/day (so energy use is a viable concern), fewer large/more reliable HDDs to achieve the total desired storage capacity was the way to go...

MB per MB you sure did steal that 80GB, if ya get something ya want/need when it first comes out ya always pay dearly.

Coulda got 900GB in June, 3X 300GB Seagate SATA II 16MB cache 7200.10's for $180 from Frys. And IMO use Power management to shut down when not using would solve the heat and power issue. PCI SATA adapters are cheap.

EDIT - 1TB in 1 drive is a lotta eggs in 1 basket. I had a 400GB go bad in the first month I had it and almost cried and it was only about half full.

A very poor and disingenuous comparison, not one that any sane person would make. In terms of making a decision about whether to buy a single drive or multiple smaller drives, the limit I use is a simple 2. Any more than that is self-evidently inefficient and a waste of energy and space.

So, if you're going to compare, then compare 2x500GB to 1x1TB or compare 2x400GB to 1x750GB. Those would be truly fair comparisons.

fair comparison is 1 TB of WD VS 1TB of Hitachi VS 1 TB Seagate VS 1 TB Maxtor VS 1TB of Samsung.
