People buy mail order to save costs period. Whether that results from no taxes of a lower price is irrelevant. The reason the tax ban was placed on internet sales was to spur its growth. Now that it is a big component of consumer spending the government (states mainly) want their piece of the action now. If they tax the internet sales then they will slow or even reduce internet spending so no matter what happens someone gets hurt.
I think you are right though about gas prices affecting the economy. If they are high come this fall then the Christmas season might be the worst one economically that we have seen in 50-60 years. That could result in a massive amount of business bankruptcies. Early next year.
The current gasoline crisis it a result of politicians on both sides of the isle shirking their duties and putting the acquisition of political power above the good of the country. The people of the USA are definitely not getting what they pay for out of all three branches of government.
