Re: McAfee Total Protection 2007 Free AR

No offense-but this software suite sucks. Also, it may be free to initially install, but they have an annual fee. Each section of their suite is a separate license and a separate charge too. They nag hell out of you during the expiration period, then pull the plug. Also it is a pain in the ass to "un-subscribe" if you make the mistake of allowing for auto-renewal as I did.

At least when I was using the program it required an email to technical support, to get them to not bill my credit card. You could not find an opt out anywhere on the website.

Avast! freeware suite is quite similar, but does a better job and has no annual fee. My advice (just from my experience) is to stay the hell away from McAffee. I could kick myself in the ass for ever installing it. Too bad, as McAffee years ago was a good anti virus software - a nice alternative to the also worthless Norton product. Sadly, I now rate McAffee as about the same caliber as Norton. IMHO. YMMV. But, do yourself a favor and take a minute to look over the user reactions at Amazon before you take the plunge.

*rant over*

Re: McAfee Total Protection 2007 Free AR

Not a problem with a good rant but I've never had an annual fee. I believe you're talking about renewing when the year is up. By then, I have the new one and I simply install that.

The concept in this package (Total Protection 2007) is that it's one product and one install. In years past, you needed to purchase separate programs but not anymore. That has changed. Yes, they can nag you but once you un-subscribe, I've been left alone.

I can't argue if you found a product that does a better job but the issues you raised are marketing and they have changed (thankfully so).

Best wishes for 2007

I know that most people don't like McAfee, but I've never had a problem with it. I've been using it ever since Norton went the product activation route. I don't believe you should have to buy a version for every PC in your house. I never renew my subscription online, I just buy a new retail version every year, which usually ends up being free after rebates. This year, I bought the Internet Security Suite for $5 at Best Buy on Black Friday. As far as user reviews, I don't believe you will find many antivirus/firewall programs that rate well with most users.
