Windows XP event sounds not working

Hi

After I recently installed Winavi and XviD 1.1.2 codec I noticed that all my windows sounds dont work anymore.
MP3s play fine, as do wav files but when i go into control panel/sounds and select an event the play icon is greyed out.
I've uninstalled both programs with no resolution.
I then reinstalled both programs still with no resolution.

Can anyone enlighten me please?

Re: Windows XP event sounds not working

I have windows Default.
At the bottom of the box under sounds the play icon is greyed out.
On the Audio tab, Midi music playback is empty. I have 6 choices for midi playback. 5 of them relating to my audigy 2 platinum card and one which says microsoft gs wavetable software synth but none of them stay after a reboot.
I know this is a problem with XviD or Winavi, I just don't know how to solve it though.

Remove the card in devicemanager, then restart.
