large wav file splitting -->specific track lengths

Good evening,

Let me first say what a god-awful amount of information there is on this site. I could spend weeks and still not digest everything, Thank you for that. I have a fairly specific problem but since I'm new to audio editing I have a feeling someone's been through this before.

I have a large, continuous mp3 of some good techno/electronica music with accompanying, nonuniform track lengths. As you can imagine, I'd like to split the big file (about 1 hour in length) into the individual tracks. I'm guessing there's a faster and more efficient way to do it than Windows Sound Recorder, as nice as it is, and Nero Waveditor isn't quite the thing either.

Does anyone have a good program for doing this? It would be nice to be able to enter all of the track lengths/starting points and have everything split at once. Is that just wishful thinking? Any advice is appreciated.

Make up your mind. Is it a WAV file per the title or an MP3 per the second paragraph? If MP3 use MP3 DirectCut and you won't have to re-encode. It also lets you mark all cuts and save the split files. IDK about automated WAV splitting.

Re: large wav file splitting -->specific track lengths

Guys im wondering if theres any software thats accually able to split up a large mp3 file (such an album) into its tracks. But the catch is that I cannot allocate the times for each track.
Is there such a software than can detect when to split an album into different tracks? Or am I askin for a lot here?

Any feedback would be appreaciated
Thanks

MP3DirectCut can detect silence/gaps and set cues accordingly. Although I usually just do it visually. There are also recording programs for streaming audio or vinyl that will break it up as it records. TotalRecorder Professional is one such program.

i didnt mean to confuse; either format is doable. my source file is a huge mp3, but i can just as easily convert to wav and work with that uncompressed file. i only mentioned both formats in case the particular software was only compatible with one format. trying to cover my bases.

thanks very much for the advice though, i will give mp3directcut a shot and report back. much appreciated!
