Killing copy protection stuff.

Hey folks,

There's a few guides on copying protected cds but I just got hit by something else and can't seem to find info anywhere on it.

I recently reinstalled XP as SP2 was causing some nasty problems. In doing this I forgot to turn off autorun (can you guess where this is going?)

My little sister brought back Avril Lavigne - Under My Skin (or rather one of her friends did) and wanted me to make a copy of it so I put the CD in my computer and almost instantly regret it as a dialogue pops up saying Alpha Player has been installed and the computer needs to reboot.

Sure enough on the back of the CD it has the BMG stuff.

So, my question is simple. What exactly got install on my PC without me giving consent and how do I get rid of it?

I'm off for a few minutes to go on a killing spree in Soldat to vent.

Re: Killing copy protection stuff.

I haven't seen any discs that were protected with it, but that's Settec's "Alpha Audio". Little is known about this protection, if it was just software based try it on another computer. Who knows what they installed, but you can bet it's a trojan like any other so-called audio protection.

Re: Killing copy protection stuff.

you should hold down the shift key while inserting audio cds to prevent any malicious software from being installed.
