Tunebite lets you rip files as they are played in WMP via your napster or yahoo music engine player.

You shouldn't have any issues if you have a subscription to either of the services and have purchased Tunebite or MuvAudio.

Does this mean that if someone were to use a program such as Tunebite or Muvaudio to convert their songs, Napster would know this?
i find it a bit worrying if Napster are keeping track of everything I listen to ... I have some audio clips which I don't wish anyone to know i have !
All the services know when "their file" is being listened to. When you're streaming it, they know you're requesting. They pretty much have to. Whenever you play a file with DRM on it the service has the "key" to unlock the file for you. Also, everything you stream from them has to be requested and sent to you from their server.

They may know other stuff (non-napster) you play. For instance, if you play it in Windows Media then MS knows. Think about it. You play a song and Media player shows you where to "buy the album". That's data mining. They intercept the file name, search for the title and send you information on it. Media player is pretty much Adware. If you're using Napster or Yahoo's internal player there's no reason why they can't do it either.

Orite, I see.. Time to move away from Media Player then?
Just thinking, from this post, its obvious people are stripping the DRM from the music. If they are then playing said tracks in media player or Napster etc. then Napster could well (and lets face it: probably do) know that you have aquired a list of songs without DRM exactly the same as a list of songs you've downloaded from them... Could cause some problems for folks who are doing this.
Im just a bit uncomfy with them knowing what Im listening to / watching.

Re: How to burn or crack protected WMA files?

Alright. I did the Napster 7 day trial thing thinking I'd be able to actually burn the burn/convert the music and play it in iTunes. But no. It didn't bother me at the time, because I thought there was a solution. It doesn't seem as if there is!

I burnt the files using Nero Creator Classic 6, it gave me the cd, but I use a normal converter like Xilisoft and it gives the same "omgprotekted!!!11" message as normal.

I have used Xilisoft, AED, CD-DA, and many more, but it still DOES NOT work!

I am getting really really pissed at this thing! The amount of music I have downloaded from Napster is a huge amount, and would be too much to just record...The trial would be over before the recording is done!

I have read a good 15-20 pages of this thread and I have made NO progress.

What the hell do I do when I have a cd with music on it? What can I do to get this music unprotected without doing some recording garbage?

HELP!!

Not necessarily. The DRM license is downloaded to the local machine at the same time the music is downloaded from Napster (or Virgin, or Yahoo, etc). So WMP doesn't need to connect to the net to play the music. So, if you use a personal firewall (you DO, don't you?), simply block WMP from internet access and what you play remains private.

I DO use a personal firewall!
However, your idea to block WMP from aCcessing is fine, until i want to play my downlaoded drm'ed files, and I need to access the liscence.. then I have to let it otherwise they wont play..

But it should not need to connect to the net if you actually have the licenses for those files.

Re: How to burn or crack protected WMA files?

I have a question.
I have tunebite...I have been able to convert some of the files I got from napster from wma to mp3 but not others. I have all my files in one folder and went to add the folder but it did not add all the songs, just some, anybody know why?
also I was able to burn some of the songs in .wma format to a cd-rw disk but now how do I burn them back to my hard drive in mp3 format. When I go to any program I have (sonic, wmp, musicmatch) none of them see that anything is on the disk, what program and how do I get them back to my hard drive.
Also, when using tunebite with wmp, do I just have it running in the background and then I just play the file in wmp and it will convert the exact same file or does it make a copy of the song?
any help with these problems would greatly appreciated.

Re: How to burn or crack protected WMA files?

Slim,

You are correct, Napster (and others) periodically refresh the licenses for tracks you have downloaded. This "refresh" consists of extending the expiry date of the locally stored licenses.

If you restrict WMP internet access and are unable to play a track, then by definition, you do not have a valid license for that track.

WOrking on this theory then ... microsoft, napster .. whoever .. can know exactly what I'm playing all the time, whether it has DRM or not. I say again, I think its time to move away from Media Player?

Re: How to burn or crack protected WMA files?

Let's restrict this discussion to Napster for simplicity's sake.

If it's Napster that renews the license, how does moving to another player change anything?

I don't quite follow your logical leap from Napster (concievably) tracking which licenses you have on your computer to knowing which of these tracks you play and when.

Good point, this IS off topic.. but as you question what I mean ...
What Im saying is hyperthetically if you had a song lets say "bohemian rhapsody".
You download it from Napster and play it through WMP. WMP accesses net to check you have the liscence for it.
You later strip the DRM from it and play it again in WMP. WMP has access to the net as we know, so what is to stop Microsoft collating a database of the music you play?
As I have already shown, Napster employs actions to ensure that copyrights are being adhered to.
We dont know that one of these actions is to compare their database of downloads against a database held by microsoft of songs played.
Compare these lsits, using DRM'ed tracks against DRM free tracks, your going to get a correlation with some people.
My bohemian rhapsody for example. Napster has him on their database as DRM ... Microsoft have him as DRM free.

With regards to migrating away from Microsoft, and using a different player, with the hope of finding "safe" software who have an ethos of complete confidentiality.

Re: How to burn or crack protected WMA files?

Keep in mind two things:

1. When you download a DRMed song from Napster, the license for that song is also downloaded to your computer.

2. When you play the DRMed song, your music player will first search your computer for a valid license for that song. As long as a valid license is on your computer, the music player will not need to connect to the internet to play the song and it can be firewalled from access.

Now, as to your quest for "safe" software...[with] an ethos of complete confidentiality... Good luck!

I've never had that problem so I'm not sure what you're doing wrong.

Why are you burning them on a disk? If you are using tunebite correctly the MP3 files should still be on your drive.

I never have tunebite set to run when I'm just listening to my music via WMP. I always select a group of files to re-encode and then usually run tunebite by itself.

If you just select the files (using tunebite) and then click start you shouldn't have anything to worry about and it should work with all protected WMAs.

Re: How to burn or crack protected WMA files?

I've gotten a lot out of this forum and this thread in particular. I'd like to give a little something back. A random act of kindness...at least to the next person who reads this thread.

Here are five iTune song credits. The first person who gets this can go to www.itunes.com/redeem and enter them in for free songs. When you claim them, please post a message saying so to avoid everyone from having to try it.

MODS: I am not posting anything illicit here. These are real, legitimate codes worth $0.99 each. From what I can tell from Apple's terms and conditions, it is perfectly acceptable to give them away, or even sell them. As for it being a bit off topic, I am sorry. I wanted to specifically express my thanks to this particular thread.

p.s. Enjoy, but I will not respond to requests for additional codes.
