The end of freedb? :(

I've just found this on the homepage of freedb.org:

Quote:
The future of freedb

freedb is not able to operate without Joerg and Ari. There are other - hopefully free - projects that will take over freedbs heritage in a better way and stay free. freedbs future did not seem to be kept free regarding the lastest developments, so I tried to steer against this as I felt it more important to stay free instead of getting fancy web 2.0 features. But unfortunately Joerg and Ari (the main doers behind freedb) disagreed with me and decided that they want to go another direction. I will refuse to comment their postings in public and I will thank both Ari anf Joerg for their work and their support.

Now being sick of how things turned out lately and I am not being able to run the project with the people in freedb left, I will stop this project in the forseeable future.
Really bad news.

Admitting that you've illegally downloaded movies/songs and need help to process/burn is comparable to robbing a bank, and walking into the bank the next day holding the bags of money to deposit them into your account.

Re: The end of freedb? :(

At least with an open source base, it is possible for the torch to be carried forward if a suitable recipient does step up. Running a private server on your own network is another possibility - need to grab all the stuff, though I would hope the FTP archives would be held for a while, and that someone would offer to maintain / reseed the torrent.
Bit of a shock though, and a dark day if there ends up being no competition with Gracenote (though freedb uses an older version of the protocol, and officially, programs may not support others if they support Gracenote).

One possibility, AHEAD - unless they intend switching Nero to Gracenote CDDB (which, I believe, will cost them in both licencing and implementation), they may find it is in their interest to step in.

There's also a discussion about that on HydrogenAudio (of course ).

It's an idea... considering the fact that the "freedb.org" URL itself is for sale.
