clicks & skips in audio copies: all my tests

I have this unsolved problem since months:
I get random clicks & skips in my audio copies.
I read all over some audio forums to find some answers.
These are the attempts I've made but still I have the problem.

I have this hardware configuration:

IDE devices:
Toshiba 1612 DVD reader
Lite-On 16102B cdr
Pioneer 106D dvdr

SCSI devices:
Ultraplex 32
plexwriter 4X

Windows XP Professional
asus mainboard
athlon 2.2Gb
Maxtor 80Gb

Tests made with protected audio discs using every available software: Clone cd, Nero, Blindwrite, Alcohol 120%, Disc Juggler, Burnatonce. All latest versions.

latest aspi installed (I tried all aspi versions also 4.60)
tried without aspi layer too.

I've tried to:
disable DMA
switching from ACPI mode to stardard PC mode

Any other suggestions please?
I am going slightly mad....

Good tip... if the motherboard is nForce2-based, like the A7N8X, the accelerated IDE drivers (2.45 or 3.13) could be the problem...

Good luck,

ET

I am running win 2000 sp4 and have not had this problem in the sp3 and 4 setups, not sure if that is related or not but I believe the ide controllers tend to get corrupted with xp. As for the nforce ide controllers I think there has been a few posts of people having problems with them. I would try just letting windows load the ides and see if that fixes it.

Ali !
not exactly the best...

which burner produces the noise?
try the SCSI Plexwriter to discard IDE controller problems.

Are the noises really burned? or only produced when playing?
Rip the offending disc to WAV and hear the WAV.

They are all reading error not writing.
All devices give me the same problem.
What is the best chipset choice to avoid this?

audio burps

"Tests made with {protected audio discs }using every available software: Clone cd, Nero, Blindwrite, Alcohol 120%, Disc Juggler, Burnatonce. All latest versions."

Some burnning programs will let you copy a copy protected cd but will introduce "burps".If you are burning copy protected cd:

1-Rip the cd to wave and then proof it in a audio editing program such as wavelab or sound forge.
2-Burn the proofed wave files.

In that way you can edit out any burps.

reading error?
But is it a "playing" error or a "ripping" error?
If you rip to WAV and there are noises, then it might be a problem with the chipset.
If it's only when playing, it should a bad quality disc due to poor burners (I doubt it because you have two), or bad quality media: use better media.

ok

Use a "secure ripping" program with your SCSI devices (this will discard IDE controller problems).
Do Plextor 4x and 32x report C2 errors?

Get PlexTools and EAC.
Learn to configure them, and use the "Compare WAVs" tool in EAC to check if your system is corrupting the data stream that is being ripped.

With the programs you're using (Nero, CloneCD) you can't know if there are ripping errors.

You can see in the PlexTools log, if there were C2 errors while reading: that would mean the drive isn't able to read the media with accuracy. (I don't know if PlexTools support your old drives).

EAC reads twice the sectors and compare.

The audio cd I am unable to copy is protected by Cactus CDS200.5.0.151 version.
What can I do?
