whats really the difference? and what would be better to connect to a soundcard? my soundcard's got optical and analog out, thinking of getting a new stereo and need some advice lol

I think receivers decode digital surround sound and output to a 5.1 / 7.1 / etc system. An amp is normally just Stereo isn't it?
