| 3rd CactusDataShield100-Version found, Plex-recorders can't read A new Cactus Data Shield 100-version has been found on two discs in Germany: 1) Right Said Fred - Stand up (single with 5 tracks) 2) Sub7even - Free your mind - limited edition This 3rd CDS100-release is the first protection that cannot be bypassed with the help of a current Plextor Recorder. The PX-W1210TSi, 1210TA, 1610TA, 2410TA and most likely the 4012TA do not recognize the CD. The only reaction is a blinking drive LED. In opposite to that the old Plextor SCSI-CDROM drives are able to rip those discs. The Right Said Fred disc has been successfully ripped with a 4PlexPlus, 12/20Plex, UltraPlex32 and UltraPlex40. The old Teac CD-R50S SCSI-recorder is also capable of reading the corrupt disc by using CDRwin 4.0 and read sectorwise. CDS100 V3 consists of 3 sessions and 99 tracks (the former versions only had 2). Session 1 contains the audio-tracks, session 2 has a dummy-4-sec-audio-track and session 3 has dummy-data-tracks. The anti-Plextor-trick of this CDS100 could be defect sectors in the pre-gap-area (ref. to DOC.loc-protection). When reading the disc sectorwise with CDRwin and the old Teac you have to start reading at sector 5. Otherwise the program stucks. The sticker- or felt-pen-trick does not work because the recognizing-problem appears to be in the pre-gap.

| It seems to me that they are still testing audio protections : very popular cd are not protected (Bowie, Red Hot Chili Peppers,...). Btw, do you know if plextools first session only and EAC read toc manually were tested ? |

| test failed @Ludwig van moza, well, I've tested that myself with the PX-W1610TA (Fw 1.05) which shows the same audio-protection behaviour like all other current recorders. It is impossible to read the disc because the drive does not recognize it. It only shows a blinking drive-LED telling me an error message. I've tried PlexTools 1.14, with and without single-session-checkbox, then the felt-pen trick. ExactAudioCopy 0.9 beta 4 can't do anything as the drive reports no CD. As I've mentioned in the first posting, the old Plextor SCSI-CDROM-drives are able to read those discs. I used EAC0.9ß4. You needn't detect the TOC manually. It worked with the PX-20TSi (Fw. 1.01 TLA 0101) and with the PX-32TSi (Fw 1.03 TLA 0403). There are no C2-errors on the disc so you can read it in safe mode with C2-error correction. The result were 100% quality tracks.

| tried this: XORFF: What happens when you do this: 1. Open the cd-tray 2. Start Clone CD 3. Put disc on the tray of the drive (NOT INSERTING) 4. Start reading the cd (CLONE CD CLOSES THE TRAY) and what is happening now ![]() Thanx in advance for a reply

| XORFF is experienced with audio copy protections. I am sure he knows the general recommendations for reading a protected audio cd. ![]()

| @dj_newtricial, thanks for this hint, but I'm afraid this does not work, too. The PX-W1610TA (Fw 1.05) strictly does not recognize the disc. In order to defeat audio protections easily the auto insert notification is set inactive. BTW, other users of the brennmeister.com audio-forum, especially one of our gurus, Grufti, reported the same effect when he uses his PX-1210TSi (Fw. 1.05). After that Speedy posted a reply saying that his PX-W2410TA (Fw. 1.04) can't access the disc, too. @brebisegaree, Maybe your Teacs can read those discs. As far as I can tell from my personal experience with my Teac CD-R50S it's a bit different but not impossible. I could not rip the disc with EAC 0.9ß4. Detect TOC manually resulted in 1 4-sec-audio-track. CloneCD 4 could not read a single sector. BUT: CDRwin 4.0A worked although I had to read the disc sectorwise. I addition to that I had to tweak the start-sector a little bit until the WAVes flew onto my HDD.

| IF UNREADABLE USE OPTICAL OUTPUT Yes again me, I know it is not the topic of the thread but if u want a perfect audio quality backup of your original, use a dvd player with optical output and plug in to your soundblaster Live Platinum or the Cheaper to and Hercules Muse 5.1, even if they have protected the digital signal, creative audio recorder will by passed it or just use an other real time audio recorder ;o) it is not a CD 1:1 but works fine ;o) |

| It's a hardware-related problem. @stupidaxx ![]() the digital readibility of such a cD (corruptDisc) depends on the hardware i.e. the reading device you use. The best software can't help you as long as your drive does not recognize the disc. If it reports 'no disc' or stuff like that you will never be able to read anything on that disc. Example: My LiteOn LTD-163 is not capable of reading key2audio-protected discs. It strictly cannot access the disc. It does not matter if I use EAC, CCD, CDRwin, CDex, CDFS.VXD or anything else. On the other hand all those tools work together perfectly with my Plextor and Teac drives. So it's always on the hardware.

| Well, so does that mean older hardware actually reads discs better then nowdays reader? Or it's just Teac who can do it? If so, what brands is the best on reading these? ![]()

| Absolutely Yes older hardware can bypass some new protections, and sometimes new firmware will not improve the situation as said Olly and his team, so there will always be people who will be able to back up everything, even with a trick or not Teac Power ;o) |

| I haven't read much about the current Asus 48x recorder, yet. All I have seen is a single article saying that this drive can't defeat any audio protection. However, I'm not sure whether this is true.
