G@M3FR3@K, this is a great guide, and it raises some questions regarding my problems. You may be able to help.

I have used Vision Express to burn DVD-Video disks of content originally converted from AVI using TMPGEnc. I imported the m2v and wav files and burned both DVD-ROM and DVD+R disks, and in both cases they will not play on my standalone Panasonic DVD-RV30 player. Yes, this is an ancient player in DVD years (dog years?), but Googling shows that it can play DVD-ROM, and some people have gotten it to play DVD+R. This disks play fine on my PC, BTW.

My player identifies the disk as a DVD (the flourescent DVD display enagages and it reads the disk), and the menu shows up, but any attempt to Play the DVD leaves me at the menu. I've tried burning in VE using the Play Disk When Inserted option, but it still gives me the menu. In looking at the content of the disk, I have a VIDEO_TS directory, and in it a bunch of VOB, BUP, and ISO files.

Is the whole Joliet thing you talked about at the start of this thread something that may be affecting my ability to play? Do you have any thought as to why I can read the menu but not play the content?

Tony22,

Try this -

Using SmartRipper rip your DVD completely (all files) to your Hard Drive into a folder named

'VIDEO_TS'

and make sure the folder name is uppercase.

Prepare two empty directories and name them disc 1 and disc 2. Within each of these directories, create a directory called 'VIDEO_TS'.

Start IFOEdit and load VIDEO_TS. Select [DVD PLAY] and wait until movie starts. Then Exit from IFOEdit. A window will be displayed informing you of what Titles played. Make a note of these.

Start IFOEdit and load VIDEO_TS. Select [DVD PLAY] and wait until movie starts. Then Exit from IFOEdit. A window will be displayed informing you of what Titles played. Make a note of these.

Determine what set of VOB’s is your Main Movie. Then, start IFOEdit again and load the VTS_xx_0.IFO of the main movie. ( xx is the set number i.e. 03 )

Press the button [VOB Extras] . A dialog box will appear, allowing you to select what processes you want to do. The standard options are already selected for you.

Select the [Strip Streams] option also. DO NOT select [Strip VOB ID’s].

Down at the bottom, select the disc 1 and disc 2 directories you created. The button with the dot in it will allow you to browse for each directory

IFOEdit created a new IFO file and VOB files of your movie in the specified destination directories.

There are some files missing that you need to copy into BOTH directories.

VIDEO_TS.IFO
VIDEO_TS.BUP
VIDEO_TS.VOB

VTS_xx_0.VOB ( xx is the main movie set, i.e. 03)

You will also need to copy the set or sets of titles (the ones that you made a note of earlier) Example, IFOEdit returned that it used Titles 1,2 and 4. Sets 1 and 2 pointed to VTS_01 and 4 pointed to VTS_3 (the main movie).

You will need to copy all VTS_01_x files to both directories also.

Close IFOEdit.

Open VIDEO_TS in disc 1 with IFOEdit and press 'Get VTS Sectors' to correct all start sectors. When asked, click 'Yes' to correct all IFO files.

Press the [Region free] button. If No RCE checking was found, click on the [Save] button.

Open VIDEO_TS in disc 2 with IFOEdit and press 'Get VTS Sectors' to correct all start sectors. When asked, click 'Yes' to correct all IFO files.

Press the [Region free] button. If No RCE checking was found, click on the [Save].

Now that we are done there – Toast that mother “Cajun” style !! –

HINT:
To avoid any chance of rejection from your standalone guy (assuming that your owner’s manual says the media you are using is compatible with your player) only use the “Good stuff”. Poor media can start errors of their own –

Hope I haven’t screwed you up too badly, I had to borrow some information as IFOEdit doesn’t work too well on my XP ??

cheers,
Pete

Thanks for this detailed suggestion, ScubaPete, but one thing: I'm not ripping DVDs (yet). I'm using TMPGEnc to convert AVIs. How does this modulate the instructions you gave me?

Tony22,

I’m so incredibly sorry, I’ve too much multi-tasking going on - I switched two different answers from two different forums -

I’m a quadriplegic and I note questions, then because my typing is so slow, I type off-line then go back to post - (apparently not in the correct spot). Again, I’m truly sorry,

You had some AVI’s that you have converted to MPEG’s using TMPGEnc (I think that’s where you said you were), which would not play on your standalone -

You might want to try using TMPGEnc DVD Author, that should get you to your VOB’s. Then you’ll want to take all of your files, put them into a folder named VIDEO_TS (written like that in caps) and then (if your size is over 4.36GB) you’ll use DVDShrink 3.1.4 (to get your files into Shrink click “open file”) to compress your VOB files to the 4.36GB level, then burn to DVD using Nero in the “Classic, DVD Video” mode - that should play on your standalone -

See how that works,

Pete

Hi,
I am new to this
using ifoedit to author from m2v file and audio file from adobe premier decoder
ifoedit creates the following files
it creates in video_ts
video_ts.bup
video_ts.ifo
vts_01_0.bup
vts_01_0.ifo
vts_01_1.vob
the vob file will play perfectly in intervideo winDVD software that I have
downloaded profile for nero by G@M3FR3@K
nero is
V5.5.4.2

When you click on burn, nero brings up a save box to save image file nrg, then says burn complete in 2 seconds
nothing is on the disc though
I think I am missing VIDEO_TS.VOB ?, ifoedit doesn't create it
any pointers please
regards,
Richard

When i want to burn more than 1 film on 1 dvd-r ( of course all containing vob-files) how to go? Is there a guide/tutorial about that?

bighousie,

Perhaps the easiest way to get multiple movies on a DVD is by using DVD2One. My record (maintaining decent picture quality) is 3 - DVD-9's and 4 DVD-5's on a single DVD. Begin with ripping each using DVD Decrypter, then DVD2One, in the "Join" mode then burning with Nero.

321Studio will be coming out this spring with their "DVD XCopy Vault" - claiming to put 5 DVD's on a single DVD. Personally, I don't care for their "warning tags" or their no copy /copy limit. DVD2One is a really excellent ripper, able to shrink a DVD-9 to the required 4.36GB in 20 minutes :-))

DeCrypter is a freeware, DVD2One and Nero are available for 30-day trial periods. Give it a shot, works like a charm.

Cheers, Pete

I didn't directly think on the necessity of shrinking the movies, but f.i. 3 or 4 movies from about 1Gb on a dvd-r. Isn't that then a lot easier?

bighousie, good guy, it’s apparent I didn’t understand your first post -

In your first post you said,
Quote:
When i want to burn more than 1 film on 1 dvd-r
Which I took to mean, more that 1 (one) regular DVD movie on a disc -

For me, I’m recently a quadriplegic and toast multi-movies so that I have plenty to watch those times I’m stuck in bed, not in my wheelchair, able to change DVD’s at will :-))

I hadn’t given thought to 1.0GB movies, (smackin’ me self up-de-side “O” me head -

However, weather the movies require a little lovin’ squeeze or not - the “Join” mode in DVD2One still provides a nice seamless transition from one movie to the next and is really a no-brainer to operate ;-))

Tis simple enough, as I pointed out in my last post, DVD2One offers you a 30-day trial evaluation period in which you may play with it to your hearts content -

too many coasters

Like many others I've been using Shrink and Nero 5. I too am having problems either with fail to burn errors or once burned won't play. After VOB files have been encoded to the hard drive I cannot play them with WinDVD and they are not recognised on the the DVD disk when copied.
I have followed instructions to the letter but all I have is a handful of disks that won't play. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Regards

Brian

ib12,

Make sure you are using the up-to-date versions - DVDShrink 3.1.6 Beta 2 - Then use open discs, - and read guide ;D

Download Shrink

http://www.afterdawn.com/software/vi...dvd_shrink.cfm

Shrink Guide -
http://www.chrismccann.co.uk/dvd_shrink_3.htm

and Download Nero 6.3

A 30 day, free, fully functional Nero 6 download can be had here:
http://www.nero.com/us/631939541422774.php

If you have with your DVD, use DVD Drycptyer to rip and put the files to computer - then open Shrink an use open files

That's all you need - for Nero 5.5 here are the directions :-)

Step by Step –
Do not use Nero Wizard.
When you open Nero Burning ROM, you will be at the “New Compilation” window. Directly under the title “New Compilation” is a choice block to choose either DVD or CD, choose DVD. Directly under that click on the DVD Video Icon. Then click “New” in the upper right corner of that screen, NOT the main screen.
You now are in the DVD Video window. In the left screen, click VIDEO_TS. In the File Browser screen, 3rd from the left, trace your path to the VIDEO_TS folder, the one you made using ifoedit, holding all of your files and click on that folder. All of your VIDEO_TS files are now opened in the right screen. Click on the top file, hold down the “Shift” key and then click the bottom file thereby hi-lighting the entire column of files. Click and (holding the left mouse button down) drag the entire column of files to the open screen, second from the left.
Now click the icon on the task bar that shows a match on a disc, and then click “OK” and now ? “Burn Baby, Burn !”

“Let me hear you say it, Who’s your Daddy Now ???”

(Wheeew, now I need a cigarette)

Guess what my Friend ? You are done !!!

NOW, STEP AWAY FROM THE COMPUTER ! !

Keep all fingers and toes away from Ms. Computer. Never mess with the lady when she’s working – it would be hazardous to your health, you understand -
Go and have your coffee, when Nero is done, she will let you know ;-))

Pete

backing up dvds

I hae been using DVD-Decrypter to make an ISO image on my hard disk then use Nero Recode to fit it onto a DVD-R or DVD+R with absloute success (you cna delete any unwanted clips, extras, menus, audio streams and subtitles you wish). So far works perfectly.

dvd file meanings

Can you educate us (or me) as to the purpose of each file on the DVD? I have a DVD with no chapter points, just an ugly menu you have to go through to play the DVD (it was made on a DVD recorder). I want to create a better looking menu that still just has one button to play the DVD. Can I create the menu and then swap out one of the files on the DVD to replace the old menu?

This would really be better in a separate thread, I think.

Key 5 (Illegal request), Code 0x26 / Qual 0x05 (Parameter value invalid) seems to be a fairly common one - and whilst I'm not sure there's necessarily a common cause, it seems to be one that crops up with troublesome external enclosures. My suspicion, at least for now, centres on the external enclosure, assuming it isn't one actually supplied by Pioneer (do Pioneer market an external 107?).

Have you any details on this enclosure that you can post that people might recognise - especially do you know what chipset it uses?

Have you any access to a machine that you can fit the Pioneer internally to - and if so, does it work properly there using Nero 6.3.1.6.

You could try uninstalling the Prassi / Veritas / Sonic writing application to see if that helps things any - though I have my doubts that's the problem.

I hae been using DVD-Decrypter to make an ISO image on my hard disk then use Nero Recode
You have an excellent recipe for backing up DVD’s, DVD Decrypter and Nero recode 2.

A new recipe is the new DVD-Shrink 3.1.7 - rip and edit with that (sorry but when you use DVD Shrink the menus will no longer work) the same editing that Nero recode 2 will do. DVD Shrink will back it up to your HD in ISO files so that you can then burn to disk using DVD Decrypter and both programs are FREE !!!

Can you educate us (or me) as to the purpose of each file on the DVD?
An IFO file is an information file, BUP’s are backup information files and your VOB files are the Video Object files or the movie itself.

Can I create the menu and then swap out one of the files on the DVD to replace the old menu?
Sure you can, use TMPGEnc DVD Author and create your own menus.

OK Jason, (I sure hope you meant VOB’s and not “gobs” as I have no idea what those are - )
Try this -

I know this forum moves slowly so I hope these answers aren’t too late -
