High quality on computer, low quality on dvd disc... is it Nero?

Hi, ive recently bought a DVD burner, a LG electronics GSA model. I have a pack of Fujifilm 4.7 gig DVD+R discs and whenever I burn a movie to my DVD and play it in a DVD player, the quality is always significantly lower then it originally was on my computer. Is this because when I watch the movie on my computer, its on a smaller screen and the dimension gets distorted when I burn the DVD and it is played on a much larger screen, making the movie lose quality? I dont know, the DVD's appear to be a bit choppy and color is...lacking.

Thanks in advance

Edit: I use Nero VisionExpress and transcode my movies (I believe that is the only option)
