Burning Dual Layer Discs

I have Nero 6 and I am burning dual layer DVDs. when I use DVDInfoPro it says my available storage space on my blank dual layer disc 7.96 Gb (8.55 Gb) I don't get it - which is it? When I am burning something and it adds up how much storage the disc will take (at the bottom of the screen), how far can I go with the burn? thanks.

Re: Burning Dual Layer Discs

It's 7.96GB using 1024 bytes per KB, 1024 KB per MB and 1024 MB per GB. These are real KB, MB, and GB values.

It's 8.55GB using 1000 bytes per KB, 1000 KB per MB and 1000 MB per GB. This is the way drive and disc makers do it so it seems like you have more storage than you actually have.

The scale at the bottom of the screen is in real (1024) values. The max is 8152MB. 8152/1024 = 7.96GB

Wow, I have a Sony 700UL burner but no access to 8gig media. So i guess it works eh? Thanks! And if there is anyone out there that can ship 8gig media to Nepal, please tell. I am planning a visit to Bangkok soon, but the last time I was there - this summer - there were no discs there either!

Re: Burning Dual Layer Discs

I have received a lot of help from forums regarding burning dual-layer disks. I felt incumbent to add my two-pennyworth.

I know that DVD Decrypter is no longer available to download (although I am sure it can be made available(!) to those wishing for it.

Anyway, for starters, SVP Communications (in the UK) sell Ritek D/L discs for just over 24 quid for 10. This is very good buying. These are the ones I use (they are inkjet printable).

For copying (most) DVD's one only needs DVD Decrypter. That is to say, if you don't want to do fancy tricks with the movie, we are talking ISO/MDS here.

It is painfully simple, if you only want to copy the whole disc.

1) Place the DVD to be copied in the tray.
2) Click MODE and choose ISO-Read
3) Choose a file to place the ISO/MDS into
4) Click the (coloured) button that appears and wait...
5) When you get the 'Operation Successful!' take out the DVD
6) Place a new DVD into the tray.
7) Click MODE-Write
8) Select the file with the image ISO.MDS and choose which you want. (I am using Wind98SE and choose MDS)
9) Click the (coloured) button that appears and wait...
10) After processing, remove your disc.

I use Media Player Classic to preview my new disc, always a good thing to do, I feel.

Enjoy!

I hope this helps some others.

Kind regards,
Peter

Re: Burning Dual Layer Discs

The best method of avoiding coasters burning DL media is to avoid NERO and use DVDDecrypter or Sonic Record Now! I use the first for movies and the second for data after several NERO failures.
