sony DVD RW DRU 810A

Hi,
I use a SONY DRU 810A dvd writer on Windows XP and use Nero or Droppix s/w to burn my data.
All of a sudden my Writer only burns Cd's not DVD's.
using Droppix i get a message saying 'WRITE ERROR' and the tray ejects.
With Nero it burns for a minute or two thenthe tray ejects rendering the DVD useless.
I have tried all sorts of dvd's, -/+ from 8X-16X.
Nothing works.
Now I can only burn on cd's
HELP!!!!
thanks in advance
Kev

The Sony DRU-810a is actually made by Benq if I recall correctly.

It is made by BenQ and has the exact same hardware but the firmware is different. In order to change it to a BenQDW1640 you have to crossflash it, ruining your warantee, the Sony Firmware is very good also, if you are satisfied I would leave it alone. If are condiering a crossflash make sure you do not have the DRU810-R, this is a rebranded BenQDW1650.

Are you really trying to burn a multisession disc? If not turn this feature off.

This means that your drive doesn't like your discs...but you are using TY's which are top notch. Do you have another brand to try anyway?

Yep...your drive isn't successfully identifying your discs. Try a firmware update from here: http://tdb.rpc1.org/#DRU810A

Whatever causes the problem, it is not firmware based.
Do not try to use any unofficial firmware update now for a 'fix' as the 810 is available as Benq 1640 and 1650 clone. Taking the wrong firmware kills the drive. Taking the right firmware will not remove the problems you see.
