| Sony DRU 720A Nightmare I built my own system about a year ago and included a Sony DRU 720A after reading many positive reviews for it. After installing windows XP, the drive stopped reading properly. CD tracks would stop and stutter, data disks would be reported unreadable and DVD would be a mess. I went round and round with Sony tech support, upgrading firmware (I now have version JY08) uninstalling and reinstalling programs, upgrading software (mostly Nero stuff) and tinkering in my BIOS. At the end of all this the response I got from Sony was that the drive would have to be used in PIO mode. I told them that was unacceptable and wanted a new drive. They insisted there was nothing wrong with it and that was it. Grrr. I have read a few other threads here about this kind of problem and nothing so far has worked. I am still using PIO with this thing. PLEASE, if anyone out there has a solution for this problem let me know. |

| Re: Sony DRU 720A Nightmare Here's what I'd do: - uninstall the Intel Application Accelerator under Control Panel/Software (once you've found the problem - and this is not it - you can re-install if you wish). - go in Device Manager and right-click on both Primary and Secondary IDE Channels and select "Uninstall" (don't reboot, shut down the PC instead). - remove power from your PC and hold the power button in for a couple seconds. - open your case and verify that you're using 80-wire IDE ribbon cable. - connect the blue connector of the ribbon cable to the Secondary IDE port on your mainboard (it's now on the Primary). - connect the Sony to the other end of the cable and set the jumper on the back of the drive to Master (MA). - connect power and start your PC, Windows will re-install the IDE Channels and new hardware found. - verify that the drive is running in Ultra DMA mode 4 in Device Manager and try it out. - if it still doesn't work, buy a new 80-wire ribbon cable (Ultra DMA 66/100). - update Nero to version 6.6.0.18 (compatible with DVD Shrink) or 6.6.1.4 (latest). | Re: Sony DRU 720A Nightmare Cressida, Thank you so much! Long story short, it was the cable. I had installed the drive with the cable Sony had provided thinking it would work the best. Turns out it was only a 40 wire cable. I switched it with the 80 wire one that came with my motherboard and presto! It works like a charm. Thank you again. |
