I upgraded the firmware to BYX5 and now it will not read DVDs. It still reads Cds.

I just tried Nero CD-DVD speed and got "LOGICAL UNIT IS IN PROGRESS BECOMING READY (020401)". I just remembered I uninstalled Alcohol free 120% after upgrading.

I would try reflashing BYX5:

or try CS0T:

Unfortunatelly it happens regularly that either cd or dvd burning quits, but it's worth a try. Good luck.

Okay I just tried them both and got
"No matched drive detected!
This utility is only for SONY DVD RW DRU-710A drive.

Detected drives :
2-0-1-0 H:TSSTcorpCDW/DVD TS H492A HP03"

And the other one,
"No matched drive detected!
This utility is only for LITE-ON DVDRW SOHW-16535 drive.

Detected drives :
2-0-1-0 H:TSSTcorpCDW/DVD TS H492A HP03"

Something is seriously wrong here (if you tried with the firmwares ldw linked to above - they shouldn't complain about no matched drive detected). Is the drive listed in Device Manager? If yes, try uninstalling it there, so Windows re-installs it after a reboot. If that still doesn't help, uninstall the IDE Channel (under IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers) with the drive on it and reboot.

It was in the Device Manager and I uninstalled it and the same.

Could it be that it's time to replace your burner? You could try to uninstall, disconnect the entire burner from the case and start over. Times like this, calls for desperate measures. Try a lens cleaner? Where exactly did you download the firmware?

I got the firmware at http://sony.storagesupport.com/dvdrw/dru710adwn.htm

The lens cleaner was the first thing I tried.

Could it be that it's time to replace your burner? Yes.

Hi Ernest, so you got your firmware from the Sony site....and before you flashed your drive, it was working alright? Hmmmm.....I have the same burner as you, and I've always downloaded my firmware here:http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/Firmware/Home.aspx
I had a problem the first time I downloaded the firmware from the Sony website, back then I believe it was BYO2....now it is BYX5 as you've stated....I don't know if it would make any difference to try again, but this time try downloading it from the above link. I've gone through very few issues with this burner and it has served me well for the time being.....Hope you get it to work~

That's impossible, earnest5, if you used the downloads from ldw's post #3 above.

Switch off your PC, disconnect the Samsung and install the Sony as Master (jumper setting!) on your Secondary IDE Channel ribbon cable before trying to flash again.

I uninstall the IDE Channels (under IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers) with the drive on it and removed my other drive. Now i can update the firmware. I want from BYX5 to BY02 and nothing. Then from BY02 to CS0T and the same. Then from CS0T to BYX5 the same, it still will not read DVDs.
