SOHW-912S - Trouble with Lead-In and Lead-Out Hello! I purchased a 912s a few days ago and for about 10 DVDs everything worked fine. But since today the drive has trouble writing the lead-in for a DVD. It tries to spin-up, then spins down, spins up..and so on. After about 15 times up and down it starts writing. When it comes to the lead-out the same thing starts again...down,up,down...i waited several minutes and then shut down my PC. This happened with NERO and the Write-Test from KProbe2. The discs are not readable. I didn't change the type of the DVDs and tried different firmware versions (0G,0J). Any ideas ? By now i think that it might be a hardware problem and i'm about to send the drive back for a replacement drive. bye, db

Re: SOHW-912S - Trouble with Lead-In and Lead-Out Hi I believe you made a typo and are infact refering to the SOHW-812S. Regardless, this sounds VERY much like the issue I've raised over in this thread, my problem only existed on the lead out however, none the less, are the krpobe results the same for you? Feel free to post a couple of screen shots (alt-printscreen from the active window and paste into your favourite graphics application - just incase didnt know how to) Id be very interested to see any results...

Yes, it's 812S. All burning an reading is done at 4x. I cannot make the usual read tests for the broken DVD+R with Kprobe, since it is not properly finished. I just get a "Test Range Error". The reported size is "Disk size: 0 blocks". When i set the size in Kprobe manually to lets say 100000 i get read results which are far worse than the ones before this Spin-up/down error (PI up to 1000). I had already read through the recommended thread, but in NERO the setting was already "No multisession". When i check the disk with NERO it finds one session with one track. And now comes the surprise: After 6 broken DVDs it seems to work again. I'm not sure what did it (i didn't change the FW, it's still 0J, i just resetted all the Region settings and disabled it again), but all of a sudden i was able to burn 4 discs without all this spinning up/down. They are from the same manufacturers which previously failed. I used Kprobe on them and as far as i know the first two give excellent results. And it looks like the 812S doesn't like number 3+4 at all. They both gave those "Servo Errors" and "Skipped ECC" quite a lot. I just hope the spinnning error will occur never again. If it does, i will get a NEC 2500A ![]()

| Your thrird and fourth scans are from MBI media. That stuff is crap so it's no wonder the results are higher. ![]() This first two are such much nier RitekR02's so it's no wonder they are lower. Moral of the story. Don't use MBI media anymore.

Re: SOHW-812S - Trouble with Lead-In and Lead-Out Liteon only burns MBI media @ 2X... But your experience is intresting because others been having the same problems. The drive seems to work fine but then it craps out. Hmmmm I think liteon might have a quality problem where they tune the drive and after a few hours of use it falls out of spec. Remember the laser calibration stuff is done at the factory on brand new drives and if the quality they use are marginal, they can go awary fast, especially on such sensitive stuff as high speed dvd writting which are much much more sensitive than CDR's. Okay so we are not going crazy, I am finding such posts as this more and more. Hows your new drive -db-?
