SHW-16H5S unable to read under windows

hello everyone
i have a strange problem.
i just bought a new liteon DVDR SHW 16H5S, it writes fines, but it cannot read cd's or dvds properly.
it detects the media, displays the name of the media, explores it(slowly), but it cannot read it. (error message)

I thought it was my xp installation, so i've made a new xp sp2 full install, but the problem remains.
i tought it's the firmware, but it is impossible to patch it (with the official exe or with omnipatcher, nothing works).

can someone helps?

Re: SHW-16H5S unable to read under windows

Welcome to CDF, jalliday!

Is it on 80-wire ribbon cable? Is DMA enabled in Device Manager (Ultra DMA Mode 4)? Is the problem with burned discs only or pressed as well?

i write with nero 7
an idea is:does nero 7 have a specific driver that works, and windows have a driver that doesn't work?

Re: SHW-16H5S unable to read under windows

Not sure what the problem is. Does it read better when you force it in PIO mode in stead of "DMA if available" (ref. guide above)?

Have you tried flashing the firmware in Safe Mode (press F8 on boot)? What is the current firmware version?

Hello back!

Re: SHW-16H5S unable to read under windows

That's not the end of the story, jalliday... We have to get it to work in DMA Mode, but at least we know it's an IDE interface problem now. I'll get back on this.

Re: SHW-16H5S unable to read under windows

OK, PIO Mode only allows for DVD-burning up to ~2X speed approximately (half an hour for a std. 4.7GB DVD). This is not what you want, because the currently available 16X DVD's can be burned in ~6 min. For this to happen you need to be in Ultra DMA 2 Mode at least, or even better UDMA4 (if the drive supports it).

Are you using a second device (CD-RW or DVD-ROM) on the same cable as the LiteOn? If so, try disconnecting this (while the PC is switched off, of course) and check again if the LiteOn can read normally in UDMA4.

Re: SHW-16H5S unable to read under windows

SP2 can also be a reason for such problems.

Can you provide a link to a MSKB article or another reliable source about that issue?

Normally, Windows drivers work fine. Another possible source of problems may be chipset drivers. Have you installed specific IDE drivers for your mainboard chipset?
Also, replacing the IDE cable and double checking the jumpers isn't a bad idea.
