(Also, what drive is this firmware -for-? I've looked back through the thread and can't make heads or tails of it.)

The firmware supplied is for the SHW-1635S.

Re: New Toy: DVDScan and Feedback Here:

@ Wind

Are DVDScan jitter results similar to those of CATS?

Re: New Toy: DVDScan and Feedback Here:

@ Wind

Now with YV6N all is ok for Beta and TE/FE tests, while jitter test don't start (it show correctly only the Pit/Land Histogram).
It's strange because in this thread I've seen a jitter result with this new test firmware.

Wind, I hope Tom reads this thread himself.
Thank you Tom for the new release, good progress/improvement, I no longer have to disable my other drives to use it.

Please consider adding display of the MID of the inserted disc.
Please consider adding transfer rate capability.
Please consider adding rescaling result window parameters.

Keep up the good work!

Re: New Toy: DVDScan and Feedback Here:

I hope DVDScan can be made to see all drives connected to a system. Many people have more than two drives.

It's strange because in this thread I've seen a jitter result with this new test firmware.
Jitter test on my external (USB) LiteOn SHW-1635S YV6N doesn't work either.
The histogram is shown immediately, but the jitter graph doesn't do anything and I have to STOP, eject and reload the DVD and restart DVDScan (0.02) in order to be able to run another scan.

I have 3-4 drives connected to my system, two of which are internal, plus two virtual (alcohol) drives.

I had to change the drive letter of my LiteOn drive to appear before my other optical drives in order for DVDScan to let me select the drive.

I'm doing some beta scan comparisons between LiteOn and Plextor and will be posting them here.
Beta shapes are similar but values are not.

Re: New Toy: DVDScan and Feedback Here:

maybe another bug? can't say really, as i'm not using the current test-fw (due to no scanning ability on cd-r's in kprobe last time i've checked, mostly). i've tried dvdscan with 165p6s&MS0M and i've noticed that when you run dvdscan first and after that insert a dvd in the drive it won't show up in the explorer (refresh won't help), whereas if you load the disc in first an then start dvdscan everything looks normal.

@all lite-on staff:

many thanks for all those great tools and efforts you've made so far. keep up the great work!

DVDScan Beta scans compared to Plextor Beta scans

First Beta scans performed on my LiteOn SHW-1635S with YV6N firmware.
The drive is in an external enclosure based on Prolific PL-3507 and connected by USB.

I also have a Plextor PX-712A drive capable of performing beta/jitter scans, and I have made PxScan and PlexTools scan of the same disc. So all four scans are of exactly the same disc.

Plextor drives always perform Beta scans at 2x on DVD media.

The beta scans have very similar shape between the LiteOn scans at 1x and 2x and the Plextor scans at 2x. The absolute levels are very different however - the beta scan on the LiteOn is roughly 6-8% below the beta scan on the Plextor.

Re: New Toy: DVDScan and Feedback Here:

I can confirm that the TE/FE scan does not work with my 1635S on a standard IDE port. It hangs on th first sample. Jitter appears to work okay though.

1635s don't support TE/FE measurement and I think it wouldn't be supported in the future, sorry about that. That's out of my control.

Using version 0.02, the only drives recognized by the software are two BenQ drives in my case, Primary Master & Slave, nothing else. The LO drives are on a controller card, but not recognized.

Re: New Toy: DVDScan and Feedback Here:

I take it the figure of 100981 on crossg's PI/PIF scan is the sample count. I can only get a 10th of that sometimes less, with the same settings I see on his scan. I can't beleive my system is 10 times slower, or is it. I get 125000+ with Nero CD/DVD Speed. Am I missing something?
