Many Questions About LiteOn 1693S

I've post this at CDRInfo but no reply yet, hoping someone here can help me .

I just bought Lite-On 1693S and I have many question to ask.
I'll try to give you as much information as I can cause it'll make you better understand my problem.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Before I Have My Drive RMA

1st Problem, Disc Compatibility

Background

I Just got 1693S and after have it installed in my computer, I try to make backup copy of my Xbox game (~ 4.20 Gb of data).

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
At this stage, I USE DVD-R Bluechip 8X
After image of Xbox Game is prepared and burning is completed (W/O any error), I insert my Just-Burn disc to Xbox Drive but Xbox doesn't recoginse the disc and "No Disc" is shown (My Xbox is modded and able to play backup games).

So I thought, Okay... maybe disc compatibility problem (between Xbox Drive and DVD-R Disc). So I gave up using xbox to read that disc and decided to use my other DVD-Rom Drive (Pioneer 117) to read the disc to see if I have Defective backup (I can browse Xbox Disc in windows by using xISO), and the result is......... My Pioneer can't read the disc.

So I use Alcohol 120% to see if I have anything on the disc (since Alcohol can Blindly read the disc and you can see the space used in the disc).
And I got this.. Result With Pioneer 117 , Result With Lite-On 1693S .

As you can see, the result with Pioneer is really strange since it shown that 8G is used on 4.7G disc (and the disc is UNusable), but with Lite-On, I can get the correct capacity of the disc.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

At this stage, I USE DVD-R Bluechip 4X
So I decided to try Bluechip 4X since 8X came from TYG02 but 4X came from RITEKG05.

This time it's little better cause the disc is recognise in all drive (Xbox, Pioneer and Lite-On) But all drive (except Lite-On) have Slow-Read problem and it's takes forever to copy something from the disc).
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I think I have defective drive, so I have my drive RMA.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After I Have My Drive RMA

After I got it back (the new one), I try to burn the same image again (xbox game) /w the same method (and I still use Bluechip 8X). But this time it's difference, my disc is recognise in all Drive (Xbox, Pioneer and Lite-On).

My Question Is
1. Is my first one is defected ? ( Since the new one performs better in writing Bluechip disc and both drive have Ks09 Firmware. )

2. Do you have any recommendation about Good quality DVD to use with my 1693S ? (If you can, please tell the manufacturer ID) (EDIT: After read many threads here, I have an idea about what medium I should use)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2nd Problem, Booktype Setting
How can I change booktype ?
I tried using LiteOn Bit Setting Utility 1.3.5 to change booktype /W Philips +R and Optodisc +R discs (ALL DISCS ARE EMPTY), Like this picture (CLICK) "WRITE NOW" icon is Gray-Out, even "CHANGE" button is pressed and the program tell me that booktype is successfully chagned, but nothing ever happen, my disc can't be change cause I can't Write to the disc. When I press Query button my disc is still DVD+R.

My Question Is
So how can I change that setting ?
Or my new drive is gonna dead again .
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

3rd Problem, Cd-Audio Writing
I also have CD-A writing problem with 1693S.
CD-R Mitsubishi Phono-R is used, I copy my Cd Audio disc-to-disc using Nero @8X speed (lowest speed that can be used).

And I got UNreadable disc.
When I browse the disc, I can see its contents but it can't be play (veryyyyyy slow read speed in Pioneer, Lite-On and my CD Player).

My Question Is
Does Lite-On has Compatilility Problem with Mitsubishi CD-R ?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

That's all my questions.
It take almost an hour to write this thrad and capture the pics, but I really need some input cause I want to know if my new drive is gonna dead again.

Any help would be APPRECIATE

P.S. This time Lite-On is really disappointed me, I used to love the quality of the drive (cd-rw). But this time, I got defective drive out of the box and my new drive start acting strange.

Re: Many Questions About LiteOn 1692S

booktype: insert a dvd+r, open the utility, change booktype to dvd-rom, tlick save setting and then click change.

the booktype will be set after the burn.

Re: Many Questions About LiteOn 1693S

PrTv, welcome to cdfreaks

Further to chok0's post the inserted disc needs to be a 'blank' dvd+r before bitsetting can be changed.

It would seem that your first drive was faulty but I would suggest you try another type of CD-R and maybe a different burn speed, like 24x, before condemning the second one .

No. You should try using higher speed (I use 12x or 16x normally)
You should post/do a C1/C2 Quality scan. It's too eaarly to comment now.

1693s improved alot already. You may be SERIOUSLY disappointed if you purchase eariler drive . actually, I recommend you to use CDRW drive for CDR burning.

Re: Many Questions About LiteOn 1693S

Thanks for all replies.

Now I think I find suitable medium to burn, what do you think about this scan?

Is it good enough, Is PIF too high?

1st, SmartBuy DVD-R 8x (@6X Burn)

2nd, SmartBuy DVD+R 8X (@6X Burn)

3Rd Philips DVD+R 8X (@6X Burn)

From the scan, Philips seems to be the best, but it not as cheap as Smartbuy, so I think I'll use Smartbuy for General burn and Philips for Quality burn.

But if you think Smartbuy is not good enough (too high PFI), I'll find other brand.

Thanks

Re: Many Questions About LiteOn 1693S

You need to run the transfer rate test on the first two discs to see if they are readable. The quality test won't tell you this. Yes the PIFs are two high on the first two burns. The RITEKR03 has produced the best result but you need to do a full disc burn to be sure it was good media - a lot can happen in the last 0.5GB.

BTW, there's a new free version of Nero CD-DVD Speed - version 4.01, which is very good and has tabs for the different tests. Also you can turn off the displayed disc label name in Options/Disc Quality...

The two disc are perfectly readable in both Xbox and Pc dvd drive.

If you think PIF are too high, I'll find other medium and post the result again.

P.s. But as I read PI/PO thread, does the recommend result for PI is <280 and PIF < 32 ?
12 and 10 are still far from 32 why it's considered too high?

Thanks for the information.
But it really confused me after read this thread http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=80545 .

He said that
Quote:
“- In any ECC Block the number of PI-uncorrectable rows should not exceed 4.”

This is where K-Probe gives us problems as for PI errors it have to be set to a PI/PO sum of 8 ECC blocks to show results that compares to the standard, but for PI uncorrectable errors (Called PO in K-Probe) the PI/PO sum have to be set to a sum of 1 ECC block.

A guideline is to calculate the Parity Inner Uncorrectable errors to 8 ECC sum, which is max 32 (4 x 8)
Parity Inner uncorrectable errors, but now we can’t be sure if one of the 8 ECC blocks exceeds the specifications. But if the result exceeds 32 PI uncorrectable errors we know that at least one block have more than 4 PI uncorrectable errors. But if the PO error amount is between 5 and 32 there may still be a block that exceeds the standards.

Which is the limit, 4 or 32 ?

This is my scan with SmartBuy DVD+R 8X (the same disc that I've shown you before, but this time I use KProbe to scan.

PIF is max at 13, which is far from 32 (if 32 is the limit), but if 4 is the limit, this disc is clearly not a quality burn.

So my question is 4 or 32.
If 4 is the limit, why that thread said 32.

Any help would be appreciate.

Re: Many Questions About LiteOn 1693S

i think it's because of the 1ecc block (32/8=4)

you should get some quality media like verbatim (mcc) or fuji (ty). ricojpnr02/3 are good, too. some philips dvd+rs are rjpn but there are also some cmc out there.

Thanks for your answer, now it's make sense.
Maybe that thread is too old ( 03 era ) at that time KProbe is 1.xx. Now we have 2.4.3 and I think the author has fix the problem.

Re: Many Questions About LiteOn 1693S

Hey, I found something.....

After read this thread http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread....01#post1068501

I decided to try again with 8X speed (I used to burn it @ 4X speed).

And the result is really surprised me, I know it's not a quality burn but atleast, it a lot better than my last try (I don't have the last try scan but PI is like 1800+ and PIF is like 350+)

This time it's way way better (but still not usable IMO).

Maybe if I burn Philips and SmartBuy @8X, the results could be even better.

Re: Many Questions About LiteOn 1693S

PIE is high and PIF total is a bit high. But how does it look if you do a trasnfer test in CD Speed? Ideally it should have a smooth read curve to 16x read. BTW those could be fake TY. What brand are they sold as?

This is how it look, is it good ?

It's not sold as TY for sure , it's Bluechip Brand.
Maybe it's TY disc that doesn't meet QC standard, rebrand and sold as XXX brand (Lower grade disc)

P.s. This is how it looks when I burn this disc at 4X speed (notice that the test isn't finished cause error level is extremely high, there is no point to let it finish).

Difference of using 4X and 8X speed are so great, like day and night.

Re: Many Questions About LiteOn 1693S

I'm having exactly the same problem with my 1693S drive. I inserted a blank TDK 16x DVD+R media, launched the LiteON Bit Setting Utility v1.3.5 and the "Write Now" button stays disabled. I followed the suggestion to click the "Save Setting", clicked the "Change" button, got "BookType chnaged sucessfully !" message, and then burned the DVD as DVD-ROM but the end result is still a DVD+R.

I also tried DVD decrypter to set the booktype. DVD decrypter says it has set it successfully but apparently it did not. Have you got any answer on this? Is this a defect on my drive? Any help is very much appreciated.

LiteOn Booktype setting

Run the LiteOn Utility and select DVD-ROM, hit change and it should say changed successfully, now minimize the utility and do your burn. Open the utility and query again it should be DVD-ROM. Works for me every time on +R media

Ah.. you're right! Yes, the result is a DVD-ROM now, verified using LiteON Bit Setting utilitiy and Nero Disc Info tool. Thank's for the tip jm1647!

It's just that somehow I still couldn't play it using my old Sony SLV-D100 DVD player. It keeps saying "can't play the DVD". I'm almost certain that the DVD burnt just now has no region set. My DVD could be a region-1 only. Am I missing anything here? Just wondering if anyone could shed me some lights here.

please, don't missinform people. if you think his PIE and PIF are too high, then you should look at this scan. As you see, it has perfect reading curve at 8x (well, no faster drives back then), and I bet you it would read more or less fine at 16x (unfortunately I can't find the disk). So by all means, his burn is perfectly normal (i only had few cases where tiny pif mountains like that caused POs).

BTW.
Lite-ON's tend to dislike DVD-Rs. Most people get better writing quality while using DVD+Rs.
