Re: Cleaning Lens - DVD Cleaner OR CD Cleaner will do ?

I am wondering why you want to clean your laser or have the feeling you need too?. If you don't mine me asking. I will tell you this. Some of those DVD cleaning dics can do more harm then good and so you don't ask me how i will tell you. They can knock your laser out of alignment. To do it in a professional manner would not be as easy as inserting a DVD so-called lens cleaner. But there is a reason why your asking this question as maybe your drive is doing something that you have not said.

I totally agree with gashliquor. The advice, not to use cleaning discs is also backed up by the drive manufacturers:

For me cleaning my laser lens, was to take it out of the computer case and remove the screws holding the cover and then using a glass lens cloth cleaner and glass lens cleaner. Spray some on the cloth and gently buffed the laser lens. I know this works as I done it to my old LH-832S and that improved the pickup on dvd and cd alot better.

You can also go that path:
Isopropanol and a q-tip.

Re: Cleaning Lens - DVD Cleaner OR CD Cleaner will do ?

I've been using an AF Lens cleaning disc (good quality with dry brushes) on all of my drives for years. It can make a significant improvement, even to a new drive. I do it about once a month to all my installed drives. I've never had a drive fail from doing this or had a failure that I could say was even related to a laser out of alignment.

FYI, I also have a Verbatim lens cleaning disc that I have used without a problem as well, and using this disc in a stereo CD player corrected a problem with it stuttering during play.

Re: Cleaning Lens - DVD Cleaner OR CD Cleaner will do ?

To sum of the fellow members who wana knw why i want to clean is because - When i use my WMP11 and try to play Audio Disks i get(sumtimes), "Windows media player encountered a problem while playing the file. For additional assistance ,click web help." and then when i hit play button again everything works fine and normal.... - I am sure this is a software problem but i thought to clean lens first.

I would have to agree as I've had the same experience. I've seen disc cleaners resurrect several non-functioning CD and DVD players. I don't even see the logic behind a lightweight brush pushing a laser out of alignment.

I agree, this is a software problem. Try another player, for example the free VLC. If there were a problem with the drive, then there should be a message like "can't read disc" or similar. So try another software before you attempting to insert a cleaning disc into your drive.

It's not the misalignment. Such a brush might scratch the lens.

A lot of cleaners are made for the leisurely drive speeds of audio and DVD players, the multi-X speeds of PC drives increase the stress.

Re: Cleaning Lens - DVD Cleaner OR CD Cleaner will do ?

I would never use a product like that - there is no need to ever use one - and if you do use one then you should be careful what disc you put in your drive - I use a special brush (not any) to wipe the disc clean before inserting it - i never had to clean any drive. Yes standalone CD audio and DVD players spin at 1x speed where PC drives spin at amazing speeds - the brush would make things worse and could damage the lens - It's best to clean it manually if need be making sure you unplug all power to the drive first

I don't think this would be possible. I've never had a drive deteriorate after a clean. In fact one new drive transformed from a very average burner to one that produced fantastic results. The brush is very light and soft. I think the two main things that the brush does is to remove dust and the smokey film that forms on the lens.

In past 5y's of CD and DVD burning and with 3000+ discs burned I never been using mechanical "cleaners".
Use compressed air to clean drive/lens from dust if needed, like this one, especially designed for use with electronical equipment and you are king. (Okay not C0deKing ofcourse ).
