Re: CDFreaks presents the SONY DRU-810A DVD Burner review

Very good review, zevia

Question: Was your Verbatim-media made in Taiwan, India or Singapore?

Overall it seems to be a nice writer, really amazing PI-results from Ritek R03.

But the high total numbers of PIF with Verbatim MKM 001 don´t looks nice, yes I know it´s much overspeeded

And Sony (or Benq) must improve the writing-quality with Optodisc RW-media, the total PIF-count don´t looks nice.

Verbatim DVD+R DL and DVD-R DL are made in Singapore, while the single layers DVD±Rs are made in Taiwan.

So is the Plextor 740 but it's not in the BenQ forum. Let's leave it at that for now and not mess up this thread.

Re: CDFreaks presents the SONY DRU-810A DVD Burner review

Indeed, this is the most in-depth review of the DRU-810A that I have seen, and I've read most if not all of the reviews that exist of this drive -- CDRLabs, HardwareZone, AnandTech, ExtremeTech, and the less detailed reviews by Smart Computing and PC World. I even viewed a translated version of cdr.cz's Czech review. But the CD Freaks review blows the others away, especially in its analysis of the drive's writing quality with different types and brands of media. It is in my mind the definitive review of this drive. (CDRLabs is the runner-up, but it's not that close.)

If I were to nitpick, I'd say that there are a few places where Zevia's writing could be tidied up, but he almost always describes the drive and its test results accurately and clearly.

I really have to hand it to Zevia for doing an exceptionally thorough job as a first-time reviewer. This review is truly worthy of the Freaks name.

Re: CDFreaks presents the SONY DRU-810A DVD Burner review

review suxs..
lost most control of my fingers so pleaqe bear with me, it hurts like hell 2 type.

I received this drive from NEwegg a few days ago. it came with 1.0a firmware. I had to update the drives firmware to 1.0D.
I used the same verbatim DVD+R DL media (thats why I bought the drive after reading it burn this media at 8x) well sure enough inserted the disk in Nero 7 which recognized the Media at 8x. Burnt the media and yep it finished in record tie about 16 minutes.
But when testing the burn failed miserably and get this the drive wouldnt read the media at all- had to insert it in my Liteon SOHW-1633S just to read it and test it..
Then I burnt the same Verbatim DVD+R DL media at 4x(it only showed burn speeds of 2x,4x 8x) again i tried reading the burn in the Sony DRU-80A with no luck. stuck it in my Liteon it read and tested perfectly. theni tried a few DVD-R DL RiData Blanks. again the same thing, the drive refused to read any DL media and with the DVD-r DL media it wouldnt even burn to it. it would stop just short of the burn and fail.

this drive suxs. its not like i'm a newbie, im a Computer Engineer with plenty of experience. This drive is horrible.

follow up:
Sony sent another drive and neweg said they'd RMA the drive. But i had aleady sent it to Sony. they were very kind admitting the statement about tryinhg the drive in PIO mode was pretty dumb u certainly couldnt run thatway. I did not update the frirmware oon this new drive and buring DD+R DL disks is pretty fast. Hopefully i Just had a bad drive. Picked up a Liteon SHW-1606S too just to play with.. I do appreciae both Newegg and Sony bothat least tredto come2 my aidas fast as possibloe and I got thenewdrive in a week or less from Sony. The Lite-on s ot bad either...

not until ive completed my tests on this drive. And seesm like there was also a media change to the said verbatim media after the review (i CANT DUPLICATE THE TEst results with current verbatim media - good burn at 8x +DL verbatim) the same mdedia box, same medial model but theres defiunately somethuing diff i have been unable to burn same media at 8x ahnd get a good burn Reading thru some of neweggs comments a few others have seen the same. the hunch is verbatim changed the media andone have privy to that info?
i want DVD +R DL burning at 8x per the review and same media.. wih a good burn.

takes me longer to test because of my current mdical conditions

RTShaw: I would suggest to upgrade your firmware first to 1.0D: http://sony.storagesupport.com/dvdrw.../810A_1.0d.zip

If you did, then it's not uncommon to see variation of media as well as burner, even the same brands.

So you think the review is bad because you can't get the same results on your drive with your media. That's ridiculous! If you take the time to look at the hundreds of scans on this forum from the same media and drive model, you will see that no two results are the same. Variations in media batches and drive burn quality would make this near impossible...

Re: CDFreaks presents the SONY DRU-810A DVD Burner review

lost most control of my fingers so pleaqe bear with me, it hurts like hell 2 type.

no his review was not bad and IDO OWE THOSe GUYS A HUGE APOLOGY.
i doapoligize.....
but someone is messing around here and ithink its verbatim (but cant proveit yet) the quality of the media he used inthereview somekindaway changed and so did the firmware (in thedrive ireceived). .H/they used 1.0a firmware i used 1.0D which should have meant better operation not worse. and yes i should beable toduplicate the test theydid im aqualified instrumentation engineer along with being a hardwareand software engineer. but im not here to tlkabout my credentials being bedriden and lovingelectronics & computers i buy computer stuff play with the stuff then stikj it on ebay or hord it. Nopw in this paricular case i am looking for a dvd drive to burn my 4.x gig dvds into 7,8,9.x gig DL dvds i use these for nothing but accessing info thats it and i want not only the fastestburner capesble of doing this but also the DATA has tobe duplicated percisely. now in the cause of the sony dru-810A supposedly its the fatstest drive ar burning DL+ media but bad on detecting errors, onthe other hand the liteons seemto be damn good on on detecting errors so i was/am also testing various models of lite-ons while i cntinue to use my liteon 1633S (modified frmware) to hold my various data. i have 8 (150 place) cd/dvd holdsr/auto get unit what everthe hellthese things are called. so lying here if ineedsoftwre fromany place in my house the computer being used can auto access these dvd holdng units andaccess te info, movie, anim, file/cd image, whatever thatparticular machine needs including outside info likeshots of the grounds around my home at any given date/time.u can imagine how much data isaccumulated from something likehis and now i have the chance to double the amount of autostoreage meaning replacing each 4.x gig dvd wirh 8.x gig DL dvds. along withtheBCD (binary codd decimal) gloves i designedand had built by me and my nasa pals (Cape kennedy florida) my enginerring career can continue even though i can hardly move.
Anyway and dont quote me yet verbatum changedthe dye compostion onthose particular dvds they used to runthe tests theydid meaning its harder to get a good cloean burn at 8x using DVD +RDL verbatim media -weare still looking into thinss.
BTW the cost difference to mefrom burning at 4x vs 8c is doubled 9hel that wasaneasy cLCULATION) SO SINCE IM UNABLE TO FDO THE TRANSFERS MYSELF sorry - i have 2 pay someone 2 come in and do this 4 me. and im sureifthatwas he only project i had going it wouldnt break me but because i can not hardy move i must pay 4 everything meaning imust bevery proficient the way i spend my money/

\So to answer your quwestion YES i should be able to dupl;icte orat least get cl;ose to wht the review states.
i thouhht it was pretty stupid of the sony enginerer or who ever it was to tell me to use PIO mode.
now this particulr drive wouldnt even (with newer firmware) read the same media they talked about inthe review an newegg had this thing saying u had to go to the mfg to get a replacement drive. thats stupid when u buy somrthing it should work a least once from tht person or place you bought it from (i spend ton o bux as everyone has at newegg) and to neweggs credit they did offer me an RMA 4 the drive, but being damn near dead i want my stuff NOW (or at least ASAP) so i had already had the ole lady ship tde drive 2 sony - had a new drive the very next week which i find very strange 4 sony(hopefully a pattern), owning 2 electronic businesses(and a new one if i can ever get out this bed) i can tell u the pain it is to deal with sony and their parts department.
ell i hope i answered your question wasntto be this long of an answer and it certainy wasnt suppoe2 beabout me but it was. thats what happens when you use drugs legal or not so just say no do not use drugs if u can help it (I cant, so sometimes i act like an idiot, an assh..e, a fool, u getthe pix) stay away from drugs.. what makes me know i wll never be a junkie is i love my computers to much i will neever give mine away)

this is a great boar with tons of good people keep up the good work.
