So it's really a generic Liteon 1633s, and identifies as such - the best kind of rebrand, is NO REBRAND - it's a Liteon drive, in a different cardboard box!

This is just plain LAME!

All that Speer is doing is just chucking a 1633S in a different box. Even the label and the firmware version reports as LITE-ON.

And Sony rebadged this model, put a different label on it, change the firmware signature to SONY DRU-710A and put a different faceplate on it.

You can use all firmwares for the 1633 and 1653, as well as Sony dru710. You can find them here:
http://codeguys.rpc1.org/firmwares.html

You have to crossflash them using Omnipatcher, and it's wise first to save your EEPROM.

Read the sticky threads on how to use the EEPROM-utility and Omnipatcher.

How come the firmware is "BS0C & BS0G" ? Does that mean the older firmware is better?

My drive came with BS0C, and produced a coaster. Upgraded to BS0R it worked fine. But somewhere in a thread I once read a post of someone telling his drive worked best with BS0C, so new is not always better for everybody. The adventage of firmware from the CodeGuys page is that you can try them out, and go back if you want.
