Cactus Data Shield 200

Hi
Lucky enough to have just got hold of a new LiteOn 24103s burner.
Trying to back up/rip Natalie Imbuglia's White Lillies Island CD with no joy yet.
The nearest I've got is EAC9 beta2 to correctly give a TOC for the audio session but when I ask the soft to rip EAC reports it cannot find a suitable read command and fails to progress any further, which is odd as ordinary CD's rip fine with autodetect selected.
Asking to manually detect TOC using Mode B secure leaves the drive Analyzing for a long time but no success.

Tried Nero,CloneCD, Feurio with even less success.

I've read that Linux users have more success with this ......anyone outhere from Tuxland join in!!

I know the LiteOn drives have a weak spot in this area anyone got experiences they wish to share.

Use another reader,dude...it's a drive limitation, even LiteOn's DVD rom can't read this protection....
If you use another reader to copy the file, the LiteOn will be capable to write it....

This is an area where Lite-on drives is not recommended at all, no lite-on's could read protected audio discs.

Plextor drives seems to be the best for this. But then again, plextor drives can't defeat SD 2.51.021 while lite-on can.

So, the ultimate drive is not made yet

I've just tryed yo copy a cd from clouseau for a friend.
It's also protected wit cactus data shield.
I've tried to read it with clonecd with my toshiba 1612 but my computer crashed.

Then I've tryed it with my ultraplex 40x and it took clonecd 1'47'' to make an image. Then I've burned the image with my plextor and now I have a perfectly working copy

Nice one guys, keep the info coming.
I knew when I bought the writer that it had this particular limitation with CDS, funds would not allow a Plex.

Fingers crossed for those good chaps at LiteOn to do us a nice FWare sometime.

By the way analogue in to your sound card from CD audioplayer and then fixed with GoldWave or Cooledit still does a good (passable) copy. we can all share :-))

OK, so exactly which readers *can* read a CDS protected audio CD?

Sure would be nice to get a list going of the readers that do support reading Catus Shield.

Okay then...

N00bie question here..

why not use a mp3 ripper and rip the music?

Would my pioneer DVD-ROM 106s do the business?

Isn't the whole basis of which Cactus works like that it is impossible to read the cd in a cd-rom. Am i correct?

If so, how do you plan to rip it when the computer can't read it?

I'm not all into audio-protection so I may be wrong...

Yes! That is the trick behind CDS (or Key2Audio).

Look here: http://www.ping.be/satcp/eacoffsets01.htm#- in the 9th column for readers/writers who are able to overread into lead-out.

If your reader recognizes the cd you should be able to copy it with CloneCD or rip it sector-based with EAC/Feurio/CDRWin.

I think the goal of this CDS ripping would be to be able to rip the songs into either an MP3 or WAV format onto the hard drive, so that a new disk could be burned that is free of the CDS crap. a CloneCD copy would just be another CDS protected disk, no? IMO, the effort should focus on bypassing the CDS to get an unprotected copy. For personal use only, of course!!

LiteOn really needs to get with the program and give us a new firmware for the LTD163 and all the burners that will read into the leadout.

LOL. I posted a suggestion over on the discussion forum on LiteOn's web site, that they provide updated firmware to allow reading into the lead-out. They nuked the post. Is RIAA paying them off?

According to the review on CDRLabs, CDInfo (?) claims that the new 40speed writer from LiteOn can overread into lead-in/out. Can anybody confirm this? (I think the easiest way to confirm this is to use a protected audio-cd with Cactus Data Shield, another possibility would be to use the 'determine off-set' procedure of Exact Audio Copy.)

Very interesting! We need someone with this drive to try to rip a CDS disk and report the results. Damn, I just bought the 32x burner.
