PX-716SA (TLA#0308 JUNE 2005)
Verbatim Photo Printable 25pc. MII

As expected for this spindle, PowerRec was right to drop to 8X because of the jitter. Linux burn and scans

Burner: PX-716UF TLA #0203
Firmware: 1.11
Media: Sony 8x DVD+R
MID: YUDEN000T02
Burn Speed: 12x
AS: Auto
PR: On
Burning Software: PlexTools Professional XL V3.12

I've had some 716 drives that butchered T02 discs at any speeds higher than 8x, but not this one. The BenQ scan is a little ugly, but within spec.

Another quality high speed burn brought to you by Plextor! Jitter is much better looking on this one than the T02 burn on the BenQ scan.

I finally decided to buy some T03s as the quality seems to have improved a lot since its debut to the point that it can be considered as stable 16x media for general use. As is usual with the 716A and 16x burns, the speed dropped before it could reach the maximum but the quality is good.

The 716A just about reached the max speed (this particular drive generally does for whatever reason). Not bad.

I managed to score a 50-disc spindle of Fuji T02s at Fry's today. I can only assume they were buried in a corner of the warehouse portion of the store and only recently discovered, or something like that. Anyhow, this is a nice burn, whether PowerRec lowered the speed or not (B's still doesn't have a speed or time meter).

Took a chance on this "re-conditioned" PX-716A on an ebay auction. Arrived yesterday, bare drive, with current 1.11 FW loaded. So far, so good.

And here's the -R version. Guess it wasn't a fluke. Very pleased with this ebay gamble.

It is a great bargain price. I wish I knew it 2 weeks ago.

Burning Software: Nero CD-DVD Speed 4.7.5.0

This is a disc from one of the hated spindles with the Intellifix offer on the packaging, and it was manufactured in 2006 to boot. However, this particular batch is pretty good, almost as good as my pristine 100-disc spindle of 2005 CMC MCC004 discs. Jitter looks a bit funky in the 7-16x CAV write strategy area of the disc, but looks fine towards edge where the drive switched to the 12x P-CAV strategy, so 12x may be best on this drive.

Re: Post your Plextor 716 DVD Quality scans here

I agree that 12X is the sweet spot for MCC 004. Nice
Also I have Intelliflix PAPA that are fine. It was the PAP6 batches that were problematic.

A local media store was clearing out those Verbatim Double Layer Solution Kits (you know, the ones with 8 8x +R, 1 4x +RW and 1 2.4x +RDL in jewel cases) so I grabbed one for nostalgia's sake. I've had the kit for a couple of weeks but just decided to try out one of the 8x discs which are DataLifePlus branded with that nice pearly finish. My goodness did CMC make some good MCC003 back in the day; I can't believe we used to complain about them manufacturing Mitsubishi media. Nothing I've used from the Singapore plant can even touch this, and it beats out a lot of T02 I've tried over the years as well. The good old days indeed...

MCC, TY let's really test how good this drive is
Magnavox branded CMC MAG 16x
and the results... are not pretty. 716A probably would have benefited greatly from having forced AS like the 755/760.
