Plextor SATA Drives

I just got a new computer and as I was putting in the additional drives and storage I noticed that everything is now SATA and has none of the older IDE ribbons on the motherboard. I always had a pioneer and plextor in my computers. I got the pioneer 212SATA drive but what do you recommend for the other slot since true plextor SATA drives are impossible to find? I'm looking for best quality burns

Re: Plextor SATA Drives

The last 'true' Plextor SATA drive was the PX-755SA. You can try the PX-810SA. Rebadged, but good quality.

The 760SA is the last one but not available in region 1.

Re: Plextor SATA Drives

Bob, do you know what company made that 810SA? I'm trying to find out what DVD burner came with this computer. All it says is PBDS DH 16W1S. If this is a low grade burner, I'd like to take that out for a plextor....but that's probably asking for a miracle as plextors are hard to find

Re: Plextor SATA Drives

Your burner sounds like a TSST (Samsung). I think the 810 is a Pioneer drive. But the server won't let me check at the moment. It keeps saying it is too busy right now :-)

A Premium 2 Retail... that would be really great, I'd like the silver bezel. Would look perfect in my aluminium external housing of my Premium 2. But the white bezel looks also acceptable.

I would send you a PX-760SA when I find one, the problem is the Euro is high. Here in Germany there are once in a while PX-760SA bulks for ~100EUR. The insured shipping (air) to the US would be ~40-50EUR. It is not cheap... For this reason the offer would not be a good bargain.

Re: Plextor SATA Drives

Thanks for everyone's help. Since it's impossible to find a plextor SATA drive that you don't have to take out a loan for, do the IDE to SATA adapters work? Comp USA sells them where you plug them into where the IDE ribbon would go in the burner and the other end is where the SATA cable goes. Anyone ever try one?

As far as I know it depends on the BIOS IDE/SATA settings. The IDE to SATA converter does not support the SATA specific commands. I read somwhere that if AHCI is enabled the IDE to SATA converters may not work correctly and the optical IDE drive connected to SATA via an IDE to SATA converter.

This problem includes all Plextor drives except the PX-755SA and PX-760SA. All other SATA dives uses this converters internally.

But I must say I read only this in other forums and I did not have problems. The reason may be I have only PX-760SA drives ???

Re: Plextor SATA Drives

The 716SA shouldn't have any issues with AHCI either. It uses an internal IDE-SATA bridge chip the same as the 755SA and 760SA do. The 712SA was the oddball drive that actually used a removeable IDE-SATA converter, though on ebay I saw an engineering 712SA drive a while back that had "native" SATA like the other drives.

Thanks TM for the offer if it was to me also but when i figure up the price in USD that's way to much ($255usd).

The offer was to you rolling56 and geekrule. I was pretty sure the price is too high. Even if shipping is only 20-30EUR the result is a lot of money . I would be to high for me also if I was you. Here in Germany 80-100EUR for a DVD burner is not a low price at all. You get two Samsung SH-S202/203 for the same money....
(Currently the value of the Euro is very high - but I can remember when it was opposite until in 2002 or 2003).

You're welcome

The european Plextor support is very friendly and really tries to help. I was asking for a black and silver bezel of the Premium II (I told them I will pay) but they have no possibility to get this bezels, because it is only available in Japan But they say they send me a black bezel for my new PX-760SA. They really try to help, and unfortunately today not all companies try to help the customers very well, but Plextor do the best!
