Plextor 40/12/40, Nero and enless error messages - HELP!!!!!

Hi!

I have a Plextor CD-R PX-W4012A and lately i am unable to burn any CD's. I have consulted several forums in the net and it seems that my problem it is a bit comum. Here it is:

First, i started to receive a message of "power calibration error";
Then, upgraded the firmware of my Plextor from version 1.02 to version 1.05 and the messages that appear now are "unspecified recorder error" or other times is "no seek complete".

I have followed the suggestion to change the CDR media that I was using - Verbatim CDR - but that doesn't helped also.

Finally, and very strange is the fact that I have CDR Identifier 1.63 installed but it detectes no CDROM drive neither CDRW drive and I have both (apart from the mentioned Plextor, I have a Toshiba DVD-ROM SD-M1612).

I really do not know what to do at this moment, but maybe should I go back to the vendor and try to repair the CD lens?

Just to help you, I have Win XP Pro SP1 installed, with an AMD XP 2000+ CPU and an Asus A7N8X mobo updated with the latest drivers. Also, my ASPI layer is version 4.71/4.60 (i.e., some files are v4.71 and others are v4.60) and I have Nvidia unified drivers v2.03 installed.

ANY suggestions appreciated, please!

Hi Blankrice and welcome to the forum!

Well your problem indicates that there is something wrong with the drive itself. In order to find out what the cause of the problems is you should try the following:
  1. Try other media.. but you already tried this so,
  2. Try other software and see if they give you any errors.
  3. Try using the drive in another computer and see if it works there. If so, the problem lies with your computer and if not then it's definitely a problem with the drive itself.
  4. Try the Self test procedure for the PX-W4012TA drive
Of course you can also use step 4 first.. I wouldn't worry about CDR Identifier not detecting your drives since that software is very old and outdated. I would recommend using different software for recognizing your media like PlexTools of Nero CD-DVD Speed.
