Please help!! Havent been able to burn a CD in 2 years I bought a Plextor 40x12x40A about 2 years ago and I havent been able to burn a single thing. I have tried just about everything I can think of. I have this installed on a P4 2.4 ghz machine running windows XP Pro with Service Pack one installed. The MB is a P4S533 with sis CHIPSET. I have tried all different burning software such as Alcohol 120%, CDRWIN, Nero etc with no luck. Most of the time the CD gets about 1/4 way through the burn and it just says there was an error and to check the log. The log really doesnt say much more other than there was an error. I am almost 100% sure that there isnt actually a problem with the burner itself because I get the same problem with my Creative 6x4x24 installed. If anyone can provide any help it would be greatly appreciated...I am at my wits end and my harddrive is full.... Thanks...

| Re: Please help!! Havent been able to burn a CD in 2 years Yes I have tried re-installing windows and still a no go.... The burner was is on IDE2...I have tried it as master with my CDROM...then a slave to the CROM and also as a master by itself on IDE2 with no luck....I dont think its a hardware problem with the burner because of the issues I am getting with my old Creative burner are the same: Here is a error log of my burn attempt with the Creative Burner: tones Windows XP 5.1 WinAspi: File 'Wnaspi32.dll': Ver=4.71 (0002), size=45056 bytes, created 7/17/2002 9:20:56 AM ahead WinASPI: File 'C:\Program Files\Ahead\Nero\Wnaspi32.dll': Ver=2.0.1.50, size=131072 bytes, created 6/25/2002 5:34:54 PM Nero Version: 5.5.9.14 (Nero Express) Recorder: Adapter driver: Drive buffer : 2048kB Bus Type : default (0) -> ATAPI, detected: ATAPI CD-ROM: Adapter driver: Bus Type : default (0) -> ATAPI, detected: ATAPI === Scsi-Device-Map === DiskPeripheral : WDC WD1200JB-75CRA0 atapi Port 0 ID 0 DMA: On DiskPeripheral : IBM-DTLA-307045 atapi Port 0 ID 1 DMA: On CdRomPeripheral : CREATIVE CD-RW RW6424E atapi Port 1 ID 0 DMA: On ======================= AutoRun : 1 Excluded drive IDs: CmdQueuing : 1 CmdNotification: 2 WriteBufferSize: 83886080 (0) Byte ShowDrvBufStat : 0 EraseSpeed : 0 BUFE : 0 Physical memory : 1023MB (1048096kB) Free physical memory: 712MB (729408kB) Memory in use : 30 % Uncached PFiles: 0x0 Use Static Write Speed Table: 0 Use Inquiry : 1 Global Bus Type: default (0) Check supported media : Enabled (1) Wizard: On 1.6.2004 CueSheet 5:44:42 PM #1 Text 0 File Reader.cpp, Line 118 Reader running 5:44:42 PM #2 Text 0 File Writer.cpp, Line 127 Writer CREATIVE CD-RW RW6424E running 5:44:42 PM #3 Text 0 File Burncd.cpp, Line 3588 Turn on Disc-At-Once, using CD-R/RW media 5:44:42 PM #4 Text 0 File ThreadedTransferInterface.cpp, Line 660 Setup items (original item values) 0: TRM_DATA_RAW_MODE1 (Cue Sheet Track) 2 indices, index0 (150) provided original CD pos #0 + 319711 (319711) = #319711/71:2.61 relocatable, CD pos for caching/writing not required/not required, no patch infos -------------------------------------------------------------- 5:44:43 PM #5 Text 0 File DlgWaitCD.cpp, Line 203 Last possible write address on media: 359844 (79:59.69) Last address to be written: 319710 (71:04.60) 5:44:43 PM #6 Text 0 File DlgWaitCD.cpp, Line 208 Write in overburning mode: FALSE 5:44:43 PM #7 Text 0 File DlgWaitCD.cpp, Line 1420 Recorder: CREATIVE CD-RW RW6424E; CDRW code: 00 97 15 17; OSJ entry from: Ritek Co. | Re: Please help!! Havent been able to burn a CD in 2 years Ok. If you have the same problem with 2 different drives, the possibility of both 2 drives being damaged is small. So, the problem is with your system. Steps: 1) Check master/slave condition, place drive alone at master jumper setting (you've done it) 2) Check ide cables, if cables are at good condition, try putting 80wire (more shielded) instead of 40wire cables 3) Check cd media that you are going to write to. If media has poor quality, u can't do nothing. U can try Tayio Yuden Proffessional Gold Ultra as a reference. 4) Check your output voltage (through BIOS) of +-12 and +-5V. I can think of many things, try these and post back. |

Re: Please help!! Havent been able to burn a CD in 2 years The error reported is a medium error. Have you tried different brands of discs? The Ritek should write at 2x, but the media you're using is common to the problem. Run MSCONFIG from start/run and disable the IMAPI service for the built-in recording engine. Also common is the Wnaspi32.dll. You have a Nero version and Adaptec version. I'd suggest renaming one of them to .old to take it out of the picture. Maybe rename them both or remove the apps, then download and use the latest Nero. Use Nero CD Speed and do a test burn (Create CD from the test menu). If it completes, then it is most likely an application issue. If it fails, then it probably is a driver or media issue.

Re: Please help!! Havent been able to burn a CD in 2 years I have tried a different media....although it was the same type (Memorex) but a better kind...tried it at a burn speed of 2x and that didnt work. I doubt its the media because I only have half a stack of the CD's left....the other half I successfully burned with the Creative Burner 2 years ago. I havent checked the voltage...but I will give that a shot. bob11879, I'll also try these things you mentioned...some of those I have not tried. I think it is something to do with the ASPI Layer because I remember I had trouble before with the Creative burner and messed around with the ASPI layers and finally got it working....now if I could only remember what I did. Thanks for all the help guys I really appreciate it.

Re: Please help!! Havent been able to burn a CD in 2 years if you made it work 2 years ago, then you must have problems with xp aspi drivers etc. so do what bob says and report back. but try a good quality media. I've thrown away about 150 prodisk/smartbuys.

Re: Please help!! Havent been able to burn a CD in 2 years 03 0C 00 is a generic write error reported from the recorder. If both drives return the same error, I'd try a single (maybe a five pack) of some better quality media. If it still fails, and if you have access to another system, try either drive on that system. If it follows the drive, its the drive. If it works, then you know that the software on your system is screwed up in some way. Not much help, but at least you confirm if the drive works.

Re: Please help!! Havent been able to burn a CD in 2 years I'm a bit puzzled by the following line in the log file you posted: 17:52:44 Processor info: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 1.60GHz (2399MHz) Is your P4 processor really running at 2.4GHz? Normally the processor name string has the target core frequency hard coded in it. The line above suggests that the processor is a 1.6GHz part being run at 2.4GHz. Can you confirm whether your processor is over-clocked on your motherboard? Separate from this, Microsoft has a number of hotfix patches produced after WinXP SP1 that involve updating the ATAPI.SYS driver to address various issues. For example, take a look at this Microsoft knowledge base article: http://support.microsoft.com/default...&Product=winxp Other than this, my gut feel is that your problem is somehow related to the SiS chipset on your motherboard. I don't suppose you have access to another motherboard with a different chipset (say, Intel) to compare with? Of course, if it turns out the problem is related to a chipset hardware defect, then your only solution would be to change your motherboard. Just my random thoughts...

| Re: Please help!! Havent been able to burn a CD in 2 years yes it is overclocked to 2.4 ghz. I think your right it is the chipset....although I did try it in another ASUS board and I got the same thing with 2 different burners so I really dont have a clue what is going on here....I am going to buy some expensive media tomorrow to eliminate that for sure. Here is another log file of a burn attempt from one CD to another,,,,pretty much the same as the other log but you guys might notice something different. | Re: Please help!! Havent been able to burn a CD in 2 years Have you tried burning a CD without the processor overclocking? My understanding of how overclocking works with Intel P4 processors is that besides the processor bus speed, a number of other busses and clocks also get scaled up proportionally, so even if the processor is running fine with OC, other subsystems on the motherboard may not fare as well and the system can have strange and/or intermittent problems. The cause of the problem is really unlikely to be your burners, but if the problem also occurs with another motherboard with a different chipset, especially without overclocking, then the mystery deepens... |

Re: Please help!! Havent been able to burn a CD in 2 years WoooT!!!!!!!!!!! It's working!!!!!!!!!!! Scan80269 it seems like you were right.....I knocked my system by to default speed and it seems to be working fine.....I did also change to a different bundle of CD's at the same time (but they are the same type) so I dont think the media was the problem.....im going to overclock it again later and try to burn one just to know for sure. Thx so much everyone for all of your feedback!! I got some burning to do!

Re: Please help!! Havent been able to burn a CD in 2 years Don't want to sound like an ass, but when in doubt all system functions should be put back to default. To eliminate problems. Meaning clock speed, fsb, memory timings, vcore voltage settings. I hope that you have learned from that, and will try default settings in the future.. You seem computer knowledgable so next time try the obvious. I have always had little problems when I overclock, not with all programs but some decide to work fine others seem to have funny quirks about them. But I will say that that also seems like a pretty good overclock..(air or water cooled?)

Shouldn't have waited 2 years By the time you get this working, it will be ready for a DVD recorder. Some thoughts: 1- clock the processor and motherboard to the "correct" speed 2- make sure you have the ASPI layers installed (why they're not part of windows I'll never know) 3- update to the latest firmware 4- try a different brand of media (Fuji or Verbatim) 5- make sure the version of Nero is updated to the latest version 6- disable other activities the computer is doing- antivirus, etc. If all the above fail, then try the drive in a different machine to isolate the problem to the drive or the computer. ![]()
