DMA Probs! Hi, First of all, i have to say I am spanish and as you'll soon notice my english is far from being good ... And now let's go! I have a plextor 2410A and when i select DMA on (UDMA 2) I cannot extract digital audio with 100 % quality, when I text DAE quality with Nero CD Speed I get lots of errors and I sometimes I get 10 in quality (not many times though) sometimes 5 and sometimes 0 !!!!! also Exactaudiocopy says sync errors and read errors all the time.... If I put it in PIO Mode,DAE is always perfect but i only extrat audio at 8x- 9x I have tried all the ide drivers (miniport, filter drivers, standard via driver) and no luck! Can anybody tell me what wrong is? (hope it's not a unit defect) My System: A7V 133 1.05 (bios 1007e) Athlon XP 1700+ IBM GXP60 40 GB (Promise Primary) Plextor 2410A (IDE Primary Master) Firm. 1.03 Toshiba 6702B (IDE Secondary Master) Firm 1007 Pioneer DVD 116 (IDE Secondary Slave) Firm 1.22 PS: I forgot to say I am using Windows XP Professional.. btw that is the only prob i am having with my plextor 'cause i burn cd's at 24x on the fly in about 3-4 minutes. so i have no idea what is happening. Thanks a lot !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Aside from the defective unit theory, here are a few things you could try: Your IDE cable should be 18 inches or less in length. You should use the 80 conductor cable with your setup, not the older 40 conductor cable. When using an 80 conductor cable, be sure that the master device is at the END of the cable (blue connected to the motherboard and black to the Plextor). Be sure to use a flawless test CD known to be free of defects. Using the wrong disk for testing can lead to high error counts. Instead of UDMA 2, is there a setting available for DMA 2 (DMA Multiword Mode 2). If so, you could try it. It runs at 16.7 Mb/s instead of the 33.3 Mb/s of UDMA 2. The lower speed is a true DMA mode. It is more than adequate for the speed requirements of your drive, which has a maximum data throughput of 6 Mb/s at 40x. Leave the drive in UDMA 2, but manually lower the speed to 8x (if available) in CD Speed File/Options/Read Speed. If the quality is equivalent with the PIO results, you can deduce that the problem is with the extraction speed and not the DMA mode. If it appears to be a speed related problem and you are using a high quality test CD, you may want to report this result to Plextor. Last edited by Inertia; 26-02-2002 at 00:03.

Thanks For Replying! I've done what you have said ... but, no way, when DMA is on it does not matter the speed, I get lots of errors. At least I can deduce it's not a unit defect! I haven't tried to use Multiword DMA2 mainly because I don't know how to set it! anyway I'll make some more investigations to see what is exactly happening! Thanks From Spain!
