Bce 5224im

I've had the same disappearing problem with this drive as many other's have had, so I decided to upgrade the firmware for my BCE 5224IM.

I went to http://www.btceurope.nl/english/3-1-...r_download.htm and downloaded IDPFLIRW5224V001U.EXE, I have also tried the boot disk version.

When I turn my computer on now, the drawer opens. Funny ha ha, is it hungry for CD's?

The button works to close the drawer, but when I push it to open the drawer, the light comes on but does not open.

Windows recognizes the drive as a CDWRITER IDE5224 but won't read any disks.

Nero also won't recognize if there is a disk in the drive.

It's funny turning the computer on and the drive opens, but it sucks because it won't burn.

I've tried to redo the firmware, but still the same results.

I haven't seen anything like this before, I image the firmware is fubared, but reflashing it doesn't work, and I can't find the older version of the firmware. Working then disappearing is better than not working at all.

Any help would be great!

Thanks

Re: Bce 5224im

Experienced same issues after flashing to 001U.

Fixed mine by flashing back to firmware S028, which was the original firmware on this drive. I backed up the existing firmware using MTKFLASH prior to flashing to 'new' firmware.

I used the flash program for firmware 001U (IDPFLIRW5224V001U.EXE) but pointed the "source" field to the S028.bin file.

I'll attach this S028.bin file for your download in case it applies to your issues.

***Due to 97.7KB limit, had to upload two split ZIP files:
Leave the S028.zip file alone, but rename the S028.z01.rename.zip file, removing the ".rename.zip" so it is just S028.z01
Now you should be able to use WinZip to extract the S028.bin file which is 512KB in size.

Brand name of my is MagicSpin B522452, appears on the outer retail box.

Here are some numbers from the badge on my drive:

P:6074510016
U:78806906100
F:S028
Manufactured: 2003/06

Model IDE5224
Manufactured by TOP-G
Attached Files
File Type: zip S028.zip (82.7 KB, 287 views)
File Type: zip S028.z01.rename.zip (90.0 KB, 242 views)

I am having the same problem with my Magicspin writer. I tried to use your instruction to extract the bin file with winzip but it still won't let me extract. Do you know where I can downlaod directly? Or maybe I am using a the version of zip. I have winzip32.

Don't know of a direct download.

I'd say your version of WinZip is fine, unless it is ancient and can't do spanned archives.

After the second file downloads it might have the name
S028[1].z01.rename.zip

Not sure why it puts that bracketed 1 in there, didn't know it was going to do this when I wrote the original instructions. No big deal, just remember this:

Make sure you rename it to S028.z01

That is S (as in Steve) zero 2 8 . z (as in Zebra) zero 1 (no spaces of course)

Or just copy and paste this name: S028.z01

I just tested this with WinZip9 and it works fine.
If you still can't get it to work I can email you the file.

Lemme know.

Re: Bce 5224im

On the brackets in your zip flile I have found that my download manager will add them to duplicated file names to differentiate between downloaded files.

I am also fighting with a BTC BCE 5224IM labled as a Magic Spin drive. I was able to save a copy of the origional firmware (S0027) but I have not been able to reinstall this or any other firmware updates. My drive uses the MX29F040 Eprom in a surface mount package. Is there any way I can reset the counter in this drive so I can reinstall the firmware?? Replacing the drive is not a viable option at this time.

Re: Bce 5224im

Don't know about a counter.

What happens when you run the flash program for firmware 001U (IDPFLIRW5224V001U.EXE) but point the "source" field to the S027.bin or S028.bin file?

Re: Bce 5224im

At this point MTKflash (v1.83) gives an error message it is unable to find the drive and terminates. It makes no difference whether it is configured as secondary master or slave.the drive is completely dead, the Bios cannot detect it. When I go to Windows neither drive on the secondary IDE is present. At this point I am at a complete loss of what to do, and am digging for information on the MTK chipset. Does anyone have any ideas on how to jumpstart the flash process.

Re: Bce 5224im

I want to report that I recovered my BCE 5224IM last night. Apparenty mybiggest problem was jumper settings on the back of the drive. With only the BTC drive connected to the secondary IDE Mtkflash was unable to initialize the IDE port. With my LTN 486 connected as master and the BTC connected as slave the secondary IDE channel would crash at startup. Connecting the dead drive after arriving at the A prompt, MtkFlash (v 1.83) was able to detect both drives. From there the file I had origionaly saved from the BTC drive was incomplete (134 kb). Using the S027.bin (512 kb) I downloaded MtkFlash started the flash process. I knew something was different when part way therough the flash process I heard the Cd tray pull into the drive (taking up the slack). After completeing the flash process and rebooting, I checked in the Bios. Both Cd drives were present. In Windows both drives were also present, I checked operation with several disks, it read them with no problems. The final test will be attempting to burn a disk.

Any little glitches I previously experienced (if present) will be far better than scrapping the drive, and may have been an incompatability problem with my accessability software (Magic "screen magnification") and not a hardware problem at all.

Thanks for your assistance.

Re: Bce 5224im

Had the same trouble w/ my BCE drive. V001U rendered it useless, except for the fact that it opens upon reboot. I tried unzipping the archive I downloaded from your message, but no luck with either WinZip or PKZip. Can you pls. send the S028file?

Re: Bce 5224im

Hi pcsteve. I've been trying to open or extract the bin file and when it tries to open the part 1, it fails. As you mentioned, I renamed the S028.z01.rename.zip to S028.z01. But anyway it won't open the bin. I'm using winzip 9.0. Am I doing something wrong in the process? Please, send by email the complete file to see if I can solve the problem this way or if you have any other suggestion, I'll appreciate it. Thank you.

Re: Bce 5224im

pcsteve, I read the iinformation you gave and downloaded your zip files. they worked but I don't know why. When I tried to open the last file after renaming it winzip said it was a bad archive or some such thing, but when I checked properties on the so28 bin it showed 512k, so I took a chance on flashing it and it worked. See if you can answer my question. does winzip somehow combine the two files when you unzip s028.zip or what.

Yes WinZip combines the 'spanned' files. I had to break the zip file into two pieces to upload to this forum, because there is a file size limit for uploads. The spanning feature of WinZip is also useful if you need a zip file on floppy disk but the file is larger than the floppy limit of 1.44MB.

Glad the bin file flashed and worked for you.

I need the FULL s028 bin as well as the spanned zips are useless for me. Keep getting invalid archive.

Re: Bce 5224im

With the s027 firmware installed, when the draw is open, it keeps trying to close, then it opens, every 4 secs. Before I flashed, the firmware said 0000?!

I'm hoping s028 will fix it for me?

I just downloaded those two files that I uploaded here almost two years ago.
Unzipped perfectly. These days I'm using WinRAR instead of WinZIP, but either should work.
Make sure you rename the second file to S028.Z01 as instructed.
Those are zeros, not letter O
Then double-click on the first file (the S028.zip file) which should launch your WinZIP or WinRAR program.
