Using Nero, To backup DVD's

Hey,
I have the full version of Nero. I have no DVD Burner. I am going to buy a DVD Burner. When I open Nero I am not given any options to burn a DVD. Is this because I have no DVD Burner at the moment? When I Purchase my DVD Burner , will I be given the option to Burn DVD's using Nero?? I do not want to waste a lot of money, buying a DVD Burner then find out that I can't even burn them.
Also I would like to buy the burner from the following site-
http://www.advancetec.co.uk/
Could someone please bowse the site for me and recommend a good one, As I have not got much experience in buying DVD Burners. I would like one that reads/writes ALL formats...8 X is fine...16 X is better....BTW Does 8 X and 16 X just mean the speed of the drive...I have DVD+R's saying 4 X on them...Could someone please explain this X thing to me???
And could someone please explain everything and anything about buying/using a DVD Burner????

Re: Using Nero, To backup DVD's

Hey mate!
Lets get you started;
Firstly your going to need the latest version of Nero, which is 6.3.1.20. If you have an older version of Nero i.e. Nero 5, your going to want to get hold of a copy of Nero 6 as this is better for dvd writers, also Nero 5 isn't compatible with many new drives. When you instal your dvd writer Nero will detect this and will open up all the dvd writing options such as dvd video, data dvd etc.
You want to get yourself either a Pioneer 108 or an NEC 3500 drive. Both these 16X drives have similar features and are the latest models so your future proofing yourself. Both drives burn to plus and minus media (dvd-r / dvd+r) and also new dual layer discs.
X stands for speed, the higher the speed, the faster it will burn a disc altho you can only really find 8X media readily available at the moment. The dvd writer will detect the maximum speed it can write on the disc, so you can't write an 8X disc at 16X for example. 16X writers are only like a fiver more and have better writing technology so your best going for one of these.
You need at least 256 meg ram on your computer (reccomended 512 meg and above) to make reliable burns. I've heard of problems on some computers burning a full disc with lower memory.
As for subtitles on DVDshrink, try the help button at the top of the programe, this has links to comprehensive guides which will show you what you need to know. DVDshrink keeps the subtitles by default but you have to turn subtitles on on your dvd player software or standalone hardware to view then. You can set a subtitle to automatically be the default subtitle tho, see the guide under help and this shows you how.
Hope this help!

Stu_e gave ya great start on the hardware/nero basics, agree pretty much across the board, but would like to toss this in as well about DVDShrink.

This is a great free program, as is DVDDecrypter, both very good tools. For subtitle ideas, and tweaks on DVDShrink, take a peak at mrbass.org, comprehensive tutorials and links galore...

Re: Using Nero, To backup DVD's

a 16X writer can write to any media, be it 4X, 8X, 12X , 16X etc whereas an 8X writer can only write to a maximum of 8X, hence it's better to get the fastest writer you can. 16X writers are pretty much compatible with every speed of media.
