| Ugh! Can't burn any dvds successfully So I am a newbie and have no knowledge in this area so I was hoping you guys might be able to help... About a month ago my laptop was having a lot of problems so I reformatted... which turned out to cause even more problems... on board sound didn't work, card readers still don't work, wifi doesn't work, etc... I've learned to deal with those problems after endless searching for answers turned up nothing. I've been trying to burn a few dvds recently and not one of them has worked. There are 3 different things I have been trying to burn. One ISO, and two different .img files. Thus far I've tried magiciso, nero, and dvd santa. All of which turn out some sort of error a few minutes in. For nero, I go to Nero Burning Rom, select DVD-ROM (ISO) on the left and click new. Then I click Recorder, and click burn image, then select the .img file and click burn. Then after a few minutes an error message pops up with "Unspecified Recorder Error". here's the nero log Code: ====== *** Nero Burning ROM, History File *** ======

| Re: Ugh! Can't burn any dvds successfully What blank discs are you using? It is common for bad media to cause errors. As for your other problems, when you reformatted it sounds like you did not re-install the drivers for your devices.

| Re: Ugh! Can't burn any dvds successfully It looks like you're using an external burner. If you are and you didn't re-install the usb 2.0 drivers, that could be the problem. Also try to burn with http://www.imgburn.com/

| Re: Ugh! Can't burn any dvds successfully No I'm not using an external drive... it's a slimtype SOSW-852S. As far as media, I had been using compusa brand dvd-r's, which I thought could have been the problem so I bought Memorex dvd-r s the other day and still. Any recommendations on media? |

| Re: Ugh! Can't burn any dvds successfully Can you try some 8x Verbatim discs, and see where that gets you? Could be that the burner is picky with 16x media (it's an 8x burner, yes?). ![]()

![]() If you're lucky, you may end up with CMC manufactured Memorex (which burns OK as long as your burner supports it well - in this particular case, obviously not!), but I wouldn't like to take that chance - so I steer clear of Memorex. Edit: And I wouldn't touch Ritek-made Maxells with a 10-foot pole, so I agree with the good Doc also.

| Re: Ugh! Can't burn any dvds successfully Couldn't find verbatim anywhere so I went with the TDKs and, although not 8x, it let me burn at 4x which is still better than 2x and the dvd actually worked, so I'm not going to push my luck and be happy with these results. Thanks guys |

| Re: Ugh! Can't burn any dvds successfully I also have an Averatec laptop. My problem is similar. One day I got a new spindel of BenQ DVD-R. I burned one disk, and tested it on a brand new LG DVD recorder (external with TV tuner). The disk would stall after first 10 min of the movie. I had similar problems with poor media before, so I just burned another DVD, ... same problem. I thought that there was a problem with decoding. Tried another movie.. Similar problem.. Tried to back up data (3.8G) - recording fails atfter 10 min. With LG DVD rerorder I purchased a few DVD-WR. Tried to copy a movie, data - no problem. So, I sent a message to BenQ. They recommended me to test my driver with Nero. After testing I found that DVD is made some Malaysian company for BenQ and on the disk and package speed 8 (or 16???) indicated, but the Nero shows that his is only x2 media. BenQ asked me to look further into this porblem, so I got Verbatim DVD-R x16. Same problems - disk burnes 10 min and then gets spitted out. I was reading forums and talking to friends. One of the advises - do not "play" with this drive (slim SOSW-852S), and just get another USB external drive. I have the laptop for 2 years and I love to "back up" my movies. So, it this a mechanical or software problem. I can send the reports later if it will help. Thks |
