Stupid How-to Question

Hellllllp!

I have a large quantity of DVD recordings made off the television. Most of them are in a single two-hour recording block which contains four programs.

i.e. Track One, the only track: Program A, Program B, Program C, Program D.

What I'd like to do is capture Program A from several disks, remove the commercials, and then burn those several episodes of Program A onto one new, blank disk. Then move along to Program B, C, etc.

Everything I find online falls into two categories:

1. So generically basic it's useless. (e.g., You'll want to use an editor to separate those and then burn it using a burner.) Well, duh. I can figure THAT much out.

2. So horrifically technical I can't follow. (e.g., After defragmenting the abdr files, you'll need to hook up a Heisenberg Compensation -- don't use the k-series ones though as they tend to ghost -- in order to prevent Causality Violation.) Come on. This cannot be any more complicated than baking a cake or making chana masala.

There's also the side-category where someone is just trying to sell me something. (e.g., McCompany sells an excellent all-in-one tool, $499, that ought to do everything you want.) I've heard that several times before about several various products: cars, presidential candidates, etc. I don't mind having to buy something, but I don't need a product ad.

The biggest problem I'm having is with "video capture." I'm using Windows (god forgive me) Movie Maker. It keeps nagging me about a video capture device. I have a dvd drive right in the computer. What does it want? Why is this so difficult? I'm not trying to screw anyone over copyright. I don't have some sweatshop where I'm cranking out copies to sell on the streets of Cairo or anything. I just want to organize all these dvds I have lying around before I go crazy.

I don't want to put in special effects, I don't want star-wipes, fades, dissolves, or anything else like that. I just want to figure out how to edit the dvds I currently have, cut portions out, reconnect the sections, then burn it to a disk that I can watch. Will someone please, please, please, provide me with some usable instructions? Here's an example of what sort of thing I mean:

"Okay. First, you'll need Item A, Item B, and Item C. These will allow you to capture the dvd files you need, edit them on your computer, and then burn them to a blank disk. For Item A, a good choice is the Smith Company's DVD Editing Software. It's simple, it's free. You're going to have to buy Item C of course, and it'll cost about $X."

Thanks for any help.

Re: Stupid How-to Question

id try dvdshrink using reauthor mode and set start end frames. then once you have all the titles edited with each individual iso file you can join them with dvdfab platinum using the merge mode.

dvdshrink is free and dvdfab comes with a 30 day trial.

Re: Stupid How-to Question

you have to own the original in order to make back ups and to get help. unfortunately tv is copy protected even if you are able to make copies of it or save to HDD. I cannot help you with this. Read the forum rules again

My pm is not turned off! only my contacts and mods can leave pm for me. The reason for that is for people like you who not like what I say. Rules are rules.
