Rip protected Audio CD

Hi,

This is a newbie question, but the sticky thread in the Audio CD section does not exactly explain my situation to me...I think.

I have a new Sony CD (I know, I know) with, I believe, a new copy protection scheme. The CD has on the case "does not conform to CD specifications and therefore will not play on some CD and DVD players."

The CD will not even mount on my computer. If I right click on the drive and click open, windows tells me, "windows cannot read from this disk, the disk might be corrupted, or it could be using a format that is not compatable with windows"

I am assuming this is a TOC type of thing. To be honest, I would rather not use the "marker" or "tape" trick because I don't really know how to do it, or if this CD would even work with it. Being that this CD only came out a month ago, it may have some new scheme, but I'm not sure.

I only want to rip the songs so I can put them on my mp3 player.

The CD is: Bela Fleck & the Flecktones, "The Hidden Land"
My player is a TS-L462A Samsung in my Toshiba Tecra A4 notebook.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Rip protected Audio CD

well if the disc admittedly does not conform to cd specifications then i think you're stuck. it's not technically an "audio CD" therefore your computer just doesn't recognize it.

i had no idea companies could actually do that?

and why would you buy a cd that doesn't conform to cd specifications?

Re: Rip protected Audio CD

And that's why some car players doesn't read the discs. For protections of this sort it's not only software that should handle this also the drive in your pc.

Re: Rip protected Audio CD

Time to return the disc as "Not fit for purpose".

They cant expect you to keep it if it wont play on your equipment.

Re: Rip protected Audio CD

The CD does play fine on audio CD players and in the car, but starting next week I leave town and have nothing but my computer and mp3 player, which creates a need to (obviously) rip the CD to my computer.

If this is a new thing to sony, I wouldn't doubt if people start complaining or even begin another suit over something, we really do hate sony, afterall.

But I love the music, and I love this group! If anyone has heard of anything of this sort, and might have an idea on what to do, please let us know.

Thanks again!

Re: Rip protected Audio CD

Okay,

After doing some reading around, I saw that a good possibility the CD won't work is because it's part of a "dual disk" with a DVD (with DVD audio) on one side, and a CD with CD audio on the other.

The DVD audio will play fine on my computer. What is the best way to go about extracting the DVD audio to stereo WAV file?

I have EAC, but it asks for a "wav target filename" if I were to "play" the audio and have it record through my soundcard. I have no "wav" file to point it to. I have another program that simply "collects" any sound running through my soundcard and stores it as a wav, but the quality is really crappy.

Any suggestions?

Just check www.videohelp.com and use one of their guides.

Re: Rip protected Audio CD

Well what you could do is record it manually. You will need a portable cd player and a male to male stereo jack. Then plug the jack into the cd player output, and the microphone input of your computer, then record it with a program with advanced sound recorder http://www.soundrecorder.net/

Re: Rip protected Audio CD

So a dual disk?
I thought it is a normal audio cd, and i'm not sure if there are guides on videohelp, this kind of discs are a bit strange to rip. I saw somewhere a little nice trick for a dual disk but can't remember right now, but this was only for one type of disc, i think it was velvet revolver and actually i think there are not many ripping options for dual disks(sony's nice idea ). To capture the sound manually like haveacigar mentioned would be an idea.

More DualDisc Info?

I got the disc to rip, no problems, after having putting it into a Sony Viao notebook...I linked it to a network and threw the .wav files to my computer from there.

I think dualdiscs are getting more popular, it might be a good idea (maybe) to look into its design and see about cracking it, if it's even possible.

Something tells me that the design of the disc just keeps some players from playing the disc while others play it fine...I don't think it's a copy-protection scheme per say, but I don't know...

Re: Rip protected Audio CD

The main problem with the DualDisc is the label over the audio side reaches too far, breaking specification. "Smarter" drives from manufacturers like Plextor lock up when trying to read data that should normally be where the label is, while a "dumb" Toshiba that doesn't care to read that area at all has no problem whatsoever.
