REINTRO & MY PAIN

Hi, My name is Mark.
I started burning about 2 months ago. I was told that DVDFAB was the way to go, so I bought a Sony external burner and was burning away with DVDFAB, but I had some problems and tried using ANYDVD with DVDFAB and had reduced problems. Then I made a copy of King Kong and it was unacceptable viewing quality. One thing particularly objectionable was the smearing of all shadow detail.
Thats when I tried using Nero software that came with the burner and ANYDVD. The result, while not perfect is exccellent. When I viewed this copy on a 36 inch tube tv it looked perfect. So I purchased ANYDVD and use it with Nero.
Then I bought a 250GB HD Lacie Porsche design and filled it up fast. then I bought a Lacie 500GB big disc Extreme Triple interface (Because my OLD computer has USB 1.0 and Firewire compatability I needed a firewire connection.) Before the HD arrived I realized that it was not compatible with win ME and I was ready to return it right away. I decided to keep it and buy a new computer. ME is no longer supported and I could have a computer not connected to the internet. A dedicated burning, game machine.
I bought a a1410 HP Pavilliom Media Center pc, that has a DVD burner from Best Buy. I also had them istall a Sony 820A burner in the open bay because I like the 810 external very much.
I was burning for a while when I realized that the burns on my old computer were better than from the new one.
Because of this site I was made aware of firmware updates and had updated the firmware on the external drive(Sony) on my old computer with no problem, so I tried to update the firmware of the Sony drive on the new computer.
I screwed up! I did not close all programs and was still online when I tried to upgrade firmware. The loading page ran for 35-45 minuetes. I knew I was in trouble. then I lost my internet connection and the computer froze. I had to restart my computer.
After that the computer did not recognize either of my DVD drives, nor did they show up in the control panel. The computer worked fine exept for that.
I took it back to Best Buy and it would not load wuindows. I explained to them what I had done, but they did not seem to understand why I would need to upgrade firmware, or why I would use someone elses firmware. I tried to explain that it was official sony software from sony site. They told me that they would have to send it out for service and it would be free since it was new.
I was surpprised when they called 4 days later(I was told 2-4 weeks) and said to come pick it up. When I picked it up they told me that they had unplugged the sony burner and windows loaded. Thats all that they had done, unplug the sony!
The next day, I tried plugging the sony back in(power plug only, ribbon was still plugged in) and winows did not load. I called sony support and they wnted to know what color plastic 2 pin cover was. I saw no cover. I Had to remove the drive and there is no plastic cover on 2 pins. End of discussion with sony.
Went to Best Buy last sunday stopped at the repair desk and talked to a man dressed in a white shirt and black tie, designating him as a geek, and asked him about the colored pin cover. He asked if I had called the geek squad. I thanked him for his help.
I now have an external DVD recorder plugged into the new computer. sunday night I discovered that Nero recode does not recognize any burners and will only burn to HD. It was working before I screwed up, and works with Nero express.
I have no idea what is the problem.
Oh yea, The 500 GB HD shows in the control panel as working correcly, but doesent show on my computer so thats also useless.
I have made restore discs and reset computer to factory new conditions to no avail.
I have three problems to fix:
1; A useless sony burner.
2; A usless $ 330 500 GB HD.
3; Nearly usless Nero software.
I hope I havent bored you to death, but I'm worried I'm stuck with an awfully expensive DVD player.
I plan on taking it back to Best Buy, and if they are not more helpfull then I'll go to a computer repair center.
Any suggestions from you will be greatly appreciated.
Mark.
BTW The Nero software is OEM suite from sony disc 6.60W.
Thanks

Re: REINTRO & MY PAIN

Right click on "My Computer" -> Manage->Disk manager.
Does your 500GB HD should up?
Maybe it just doesn't have a drive letter assigned

In your bios, ensure that booting from USB devices is disabled.
I'm not sure why you can't unplug the Sony USB drive while booting, then plugging it in.

Admitting that you've illegally downloaded movies/songs and need help to process/burn is comparable to robbing a bank, and walking into the bank the next day holding the bags of money to deposit them into your account.

The sony drive is, was an internal on the new computer, I have removed that.
The hp drive that came with and an external Lg drive are connected, seem to work with everything but recode.
thank you for the help.

Re: REINTRO & MY PAIN

Hi again,
I have made 2 calls to Nero's help line @1.29 per min. and installed wnapsi32.dll as suggested, and used their clean install tool and reinstalled Nero software.
The only deviation is that I installed software from disc not frlom download site. (I have dial up connection)
Recode 2 still does not list my burners as an option to burn to.
The only thing I can think to do is have Best Buy reinstall OS.

HELP comments appreceated. thougts, suggestions?

Re: REINTRO & MY PAIN

Right click "My Computer"->Properties->Hardware->Device manager

Click the +"USB Controllers" & check that there are no yellow "Exclamation marks".
Click the +"DVD/CD-ROM drives" & check whether anything is detected there.

Please report back.

Also, please use the nero->nero toolkit->info tool and save the log (up the top near the right) and then paste it between "[ code ]" &"[/code]" tags. Remove your username & serial number of course.
Code:

@above post.
Sorry, this is the wrong logfile.

You need to use the nero INFOTOOL which is in the Nero->Nero Toolkit folder.

"["code"]" & [/code] tags (minus the "") post the entire log in a tiny window that scrolls, rather than a huge post

Re: REINTRO & MY PAIN

If I may just add something... With the 'code tags' business, an alternative to Debro's easy way is to go to the Advanced editor, select the text and press the "#" button. The code tags are automatically put at the beginning and the end. Graphical description here.

Re: REINTRO & MY PAIN

Hi again debro, and hello imkidd57!
Sorry for the delay, had to sleep work sleep.
Hope you can excuse my ignorance, but I don't understand anything about code tags.
However I may have found the problem! I hope this is all that's wrong.
Here is a screen shot of aspi from info tool from the old compaq.
On the HP it reads:

wnapsi32.dll 2.0.1.74 164112 bytes May 24 2006
Thats all there is and below it says in a yellow bar that:
ASPI file(s) are missing.
Thanks for taking the time to help.
Mark

Re: REINTRO & MY PAIN

This might not be the problem, but I can't tell from your post what drive you have in the pc you are trying to install Nero in, But I have had a version of Nero that came with an old burner and when installing a new drive (newer dvd burner) Nero would not recognize the drive, because it was not the drive that the software came bundled with. I don't know if you are using a version of Nero that came with a different burner, or not. Good Luck.

Re: REINTRO & MY PAIN

I noticed in your nero infotool log that you had some roxio software installed. Roxio and nero have had "incompatibilities" in the past.

Please ensure that the following is completely uninstalled:
Code:
Description : Roxio MyDVD
Company : Sonic Solutions

Re: REINTRO & MY PAIN

Just to confirm the system here..

We have:
Winxp & Nero 6.6.0.14 (relatively recent)
1 internal SONY 820A DVDwriter (with no jumper designating it as master or slave)
1 External USB 500GB HD (working)
1 Internal HP dvdwriter (unknown model, but working).

All dvdwriters are detected & work OK in nero & general windows.

Sony 820A isn't recognsed by nero recode.

All correct?

Re: REINTRO & MY PAIN

------------------

Drive Information
------------------
Drive : TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-H552L

Drive Information
------------------
Drive : HL-DT-ST DVDRRW GSA-2166D

The sony is out. TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-H552L is original internal.
: HL-DT-ST DVDRRW GSA-2166D is LG external.
Recode does not recognize these to burn to. However both can be used to burn from.
I can burn to them anything other than recode such as nero express etc..
scince it worked properly before failed firmware upgrade, and I have restored to factory original, I will take it in and see if they will wipe the HD and reinstall windows.
