Monsters Inc. DVD playback issue

Hi all,

I have a Monsters Inc. DVD and my DVD playback software is WinDVD. However, the software crashes when trying to play this DVD. I downloaded and tried the latest version of the Cyberlink PowerDVD and that crashes too. Ditto for WMP 10. The only player that can play the DVD on my comp is VLC media player. Any solution for this. Does anyone have this same issue?

Thx,
Aquarius

Windvd AND powerdvd is a bad idea!

Uninstall AT LEAST one of them, then run dxdiag.

Re: Monsters Inc. DVD playback issue

Dxdiag will show any malfunction of directX installed on your computer.

Are you using a pressed disc or a burned one?

Re: Monsters Inc. DVD playback issue

the disc is a pressed one. Monsters Inc. Collectors edition Disc 1. What baffles me is that only VLC media player is able to play the disc, no player installed on my comp can !!

Re: Monsters Inc. DVD playback issue

Try to read this disc also in some standalones. It's possible that disc is damaged.

Check if it's dirty or scratched. Some readers are really pickym and also few dust grains can cause playback issues

Re: Monsters Inc. DVD playback issue

ummm....i will try doing that tonite....got a lotta stuff to work on....if it does play on the standalone, what would it mean? Read issues on my Lite-On drive?
I'll connect my Pioneer DVR -109 drive to the comp and see if it reads on that (although i don't think there is a DVD read problem here). Any other suggestions?

Thx,
Aquarius

Re: Monsters Inc. DVD playback issue

Different drives have different capabilities to read discs. Some drives are really picky.

Usually liteon are good readers.

Re: Monsters Inc. DVD playback issue

hi,

I figured out the problem...but I can't figure out the solution.
The Monsters Inc. DVD that I have is a R3 Collectors Edition. I have DVD-Idle Pro running on my comp which launches automatically when i play any DVD in Windvd. And that's where the issue lies.
VLC is not included in the program list of DVDIdle pro by default. I inncluded VLC player in that list and tried playing the DVD. It was a no go...VLC crashed. I removed windvd from the DVDIdle pro program list and then tried playing the DVD, i got a dialog box asking to change the region. I didn't go further since it would have reset my DVD drive region and i didn't want that. I re-included windvd in the DIP program list and removed VLC, and played the movie on VLC again. Voila!! It played alright. Also, I figured that VLC does not change the drive region code even though the DVD belongs to a different region. My drive region is still set to region 1 although i watched the R3 DVD using VLC.
Now, my question is...what is VLC doing that DVD Idle Pro can't?
