Lite-On SHW 160P6S, slower than my Toshiba 2x?!

I bought this last week so I could speed up my DVD process a ton, but I'm thinking it is slower. I've got to be doing something wrong, I hope! Took like 3 hours to burn this DVD tonight!

I also upgraded my DVDs to Taiyo Yuden DVD-R 16X. I'm using Memories OnTV to make my DVD slideshows with mostly pictures music and some video clips. What can I do to speed up the process.

Thanks, Mr Green!

Re: Lite-On SHW 160P6S, slower than my Toshiba 2x?!

there are a few things that could cause it. The first thing that I would check is to see if dma is enabled.

Download cdspeed (free) and do a burst rate test. It should be at least 22MBps. If it is not, then try enabling dma in your motherboard bios and try again.
something else that can speed things up (though it would not cause the slow speeds you are getting). Check the liteon forum and see if that drive supports higher read speeds (I think it does). If it does, patch the firmware to allow the higher speeds.

Thanks ripit, I checked the DMA, and theyare set at Ultra DMA modes 5 or 2. Not sure what that means.

I checked to see if the MemoriesOnTV supports 16x, and it seems to.

It sounds like you are looking at the wrong IDE channel unless you have your liteon hooked up on the same IDE cable as your Hard Drive. Check the secondary IDE channel. the Liteon should be running at ultra DMA 4. If you have Nero, run Info Tool and save the log and post it so we can see if it is configured correctly.

OK, ran the DVD speed Nero test, and it is right on, 16.01x top speed. 11.35 average.

And, I checked the DMA again, and the Lite-On is at Ultra 4, as mentioned.

I'm doing something wrong during processing, I guess! Help!

Use CD DVD Speed and run a burst rate test. Scroll down on the "Run Test" button to Burst Rate or just push your F6 key.

Rendering slideshow videos can take a lot of time. You should be able to follow how long the actual burn process takes (from when the disc spins up and drive LED indicates writing). That should be between 5 and 10 minutes for a full DVD.

Attached Devices
Description : Master: LITEON DVD-ROM LTD122
Type : CD-Rom Drive
DMA : On
Autorun : On
Description : Slave: LITE-ON DVDRW SHW-160P6S
Type : CD-Rom Drive
DMA : On
Autorun : On
You have your drives in the wrong order on you IDE cable.
Attach the 160P6S to the end of the cable which is master
and the DVD-ROM to the middle connector. Make sure you set the jumper
on the back of the 160P6S to master and the DVD-ROM drive to slave.
You should also use an 80 wire 40 pin IDE cable if you are not already
doing so.

Re: Lite-On SHW 160P6S, slower than my Toshiba 2x?!

When you’re ripping the DVD Disc you want the drive to read as fast as possible therefore you should assign your reader drive (CD-ROM) to mater and the drive which will be fed from your reader would be in Slave position. So I believe has his configuration OK (CD-ROM as Master & DVD-RW as Slave). This configuration also work best on fly copying that means the reader will be faster (Master) and writer slower (Slave). You can also read the manufacturer installation manual.

OK, just tried the burst rate test 2 times, got nothing the first time around, and on the 2nd attempt I got an error of "INVALID FIELD IN CDB [052400]". I'm going to give it another try and report back!

Yep, same error!

Also make sure your IDE cable is OK and if you have the new cable it would pay off to try replace your IDE calbe which might be the source of your problem.
