k3b suse 10.0 can't see burned dvd

I have K3B 0.12.3 (KDE 3.42 Level B) SuSE 10.0
I have a Toshiba drive and am using Memorex DVDs

I used K3B to do a data burn of one of my dirs to back up the files. The
burn went successfully according to K3B. However when I put the disk in the
drive to read it. All of my software including the K3B that just burned the
DVD says there is no disk in the drive. Looking carefully at the disk I can
see that it has been burned, but I cannot get the data (a tar ball) off of
it. I tried a second disk this morning with the same results.
I can however put a movie in the DVD drive and it plays fine.

I really want the data off the dvd. Any ideas. I have tried just about
everything, including OS-X, W98, Wxp, and 3 different computers, with no
luck.
Thanks,
Steve

I have beat my head against the wall on this one and am not getting anywhere. Can anyone recommend some good recovery software. I just want the tarball off the dvd.

Re: k3b suse 10.0 can't see burned dvd

I have experimented with a couple of other brand new dvds. K3B reports no errors durning the burn and ejects the dvd when it is done and announces a successfully burn. If I put the dvd right back in the drive k3b reports that there is no disk in the drive. And it looks as though what ever it is doing is making the dvd invisible to other drives and os's also.

Ah sorry, missed that.

Is it possible to burn with verify?
Have you used a lens cleaner?

I personally would avoid Memorex media.

Re: k3b suse 10.0 can't see burned dvd

I assume you have set the appropriate rights for users and groups. As well as the links and mountpoints for the drive,

After reading your post, and as I got that O/S just a few days ago, and do not have everything settled yet, I tried to record a DVD using K3b aas you did.
First I'd a prob with users and groups and needed to log as root. Tried a simulation and it did fail, Then I decided to burn a direct copy I needed and it went through.
But, at the end K3b couldn't see the discs content, besides I could do it from the reader.
Went to the Sys Configuration and added links and mountpoints for all my drives.

Switched to win2000 and could see the disc's content using 2 dif drives.

Went back to Suse and all drives were now mapped with the right icons but for one, besides it worked when I did introduce a DVD-RAM.
Afterwards I could read the copy content in all drives.
By the way, I used Memorex DVD-R to make the copy and a NEC 4551.

Did you configure K3b or change the default one? Did you make a simulation? It can give you an indication about what can be wrong with your sys. If it fails and you read the logs.

agomes,

Thanks for the reply. You said:
> But, at the end K3b couldn't see the discs content, besides I could do it from the reader.

My K3B cannot even detect that the DVD is in the drive once it burns it. But if I put in a dvd movie, it sees that fine and will play it fine,

>Went to the Sys Configuration and added links and mountpoints for all my drives.

Please Email me and let me know exactly what you did. I really want the data off the dvd.

Thanks,
Steve

Re: k3b suse 10.0 can't see burned dvd

Did you record it as DAO or as "appendable". I'm not sure how K3b works out when you leave it as "AUTO".
Probably if it was not burnt as DAO, closing the discs is not the same as Finalizing it.
Even after setting the links and mounting points through sys configuration K3b was not seeing my discs content, but I could see it in Konqueror.

About the way you burnt the disc, may I ask you was it a multisession, and the file(s) you want to see were not in the first session?
Sometimes this can be an issue, as further recording session risk to stay hidden.

You can try using CD/DVD Diagnostic or CD/DVD Inspector both are very good and been able to recover data from bad burns and from multisession burns

Re: k3b suse 10.0 can't see burned dvd

radioman621,

Once you did set the mountpoint, did you try to access it through the command line?
As you have your device in "devs" open the device folder and try to see the files in it?
If you're able to do it as su or root, you can copy your tarball compressed file to another location an afterwards try to se if Konqueror sees it at your home location (if this is the choosen destination you gave to the copy).

Sorry if I didn't email the steps but I'm far away from my Suse machine today+

Re: k3b suse 10.0 can't see burned dvd

agomes,

Yes, I did try it command line. I could see the drive but not the DVD. When I burned it I used the K3B defaults, which have always worked fine for me when burning CDs.

coathi,

The software you recommended looks good but appears to be Windows software. I am running SuSE 10.0.

Re: k3b suse 10.0 can't see burned dvd

When I referred the command line was also for you to try to mount the file not just the device.
Have you looked at growisofs man page to find a way to try to close the DVD?
What's the version of dvd+rw-tools package you have with K3b is it 0.19 or 0.21?
0.19 seems to have a bug causing problems to close the discs, that was corrected by 0.21.
K3b 0.12.12 was released just a few days ago, you could try to install it and see if it can solve something for you:

Good luck

Re: k3b suse 10.0 can't see burned dvd

Radioman621 Yes I know you are running SuSE 10.0, I’m also running the same, just upgraded from SuSE 9.2 a few weeks ago, so far been very happy with it, I know the programs I gave you are for Windows but if you want your data from the CD! Try and find some one running Windows and try and salvage it of the CD that way. What happened to you seems very unusual to me and can’t say I had it happen to me I been using k3b for years great program and always worked well for me. All the best in trying to recover your data of the CD.
