Greetings from Brazil!

Hello, All! Greetings from Brazil!

I live in Sao Paulo, Brazil's largest city, and I work as a Systems Consultant. I have been using computers for more than 20 years, starting with a Sinclair ZX81 clone. My current configuration is an Abit KR7-133A with an Athlon XP 1700+, which I intend to replace soon with an Athlon 64.

Although I have joined this forum today, I have been reading its posts for several months. Since the information I gathered here helped me countless times, and the reports on the hardware section helped me choosing my current burner, I decided to spend some time and register, so that I can be able to share my experiences.

I have been using burners since 2000, when I bought an HP9100i. Actually, the first one I bought was an HP8100i, in 1999, but it never worked with the configuration I had then (Soyo MB and Pentium 166), so I quickly resold it to a friend, who is still using it as a spare burner.

The HP9100 had never produced a coaster, but its slow writing speed started to bother me. So, in 2002 I replaced the HP with an LG DVD/CD-RW combo, GCC4320B. By then, I had broadband access, and the amount of recording material was increasing. The LG is still working, with a good record: one coaster produced in more than two hundred burns, and that coaster was caused by media degradation, not bad writing.

Two months ago, I bought my first DVD Writer, a Sony DRU700A. I based my choice on availability (not all the quality brands can be found here), price and, as I said, the reports I have read in this forum. The number of utilities and the good community support for LiteOn drivers were also important factors. I started burning some DVD+R's, mostly backups of my DVD movies and data files. The record is 20 OK DVD's/0 coasters until now, and I hope this 0 remains for a long time.

It's been difficult finding good quality DVD+/-R media here. I remember that, back in 2000, we could find HP-labeled Mitsuis in retail stores and supermarkets, but now they only sell cheap media, and it's almost impossible to find MAM-E or Taiyo Yuden products. I have been using Daxon and Ritek DVD+R, which are sold for US$ 1~US$1.3 per unit. I intend to post, on the following days, the K-Probe2 tests on those, as well as tests with my "old" (3~4 y.o.) CD media (HP-Mitsui, TDK, etc).

That's all for now. Thanks for reading until here. I promise my next posts won't be this long!

Regards.

Re: Introduce yourself: Say hi !

Ok - Hi, my nickname is lfcrule1972 - a few of you might be able to work out that lfc stands for Liverpool Football Club and 1972 is the year of my birth. I follow Liverpool through the season but would probably watch most footie matches given the chance. Also like Rugby Union and am lucky that in my job I get offered corporate tickets to Twickenham a couple of times a year. My job ? Ah well not very exciting - I work for the Uk's most succesfull holiday company - that last year sponsored "Im a Celebrity get me out of here" unfortunately I didn't get to meet Jordan !!

Have used computers for years but it wasn't until last year when I bite the bullet (better than a pillow ) and got myself a half way decent one for home that I got really into backing up DVD's. I found the DVD Decrypter site, learnt about DVD Shrink and have been hooked ever since. I am a proper newb here but have been on the Decrypter forums for almost a year and am a beta tester - so if you are using the latest version and it doesn't work for you - its really not my fault ! ha ha

Will do my best to remember forum ettiquette and enjoy myself at the same time - would like to be able to help out where I can but don't hold your breath !

See you around.

Hi all plugged in to the www

I am new to the DVD backup game, have young kids who treat DVD media with little affection (they are getting better), I am also a teacher and feel the DVD copy/backup game will save my originals. I live in Tasmania Australia and love the net for keeping in touch with the world!!!!

cheers now

Kent

New user saying hello!

Hello guys/gals,
Just wanted to say thank you for having such a well put together forum. I am very new to this dvd/cd backup thing and need all the help I can get.
Here is a little about me. I am a 26yo Army Officer getting ready to head to Iraq. I needed to copy all my dvds before I head over. The sand over there is like talc powder and ruins everything. I would rather bring copies of my cd/dvds. So investing in a burner was my best option. I have found my way here in search of advice and maybe even a few pen pals when I get stuck in the desert. Thanks again for the great forum. Please be paitent with my "newbie" questions. Have a good day/night.

Re: New user saying hello!

welcome to the forum. i'm always appreciative of the sacrifices of the men and women of the armed forces.

since physical storage space is definitely going to be an issue in your situation, i'd recommend backing up your dvd movies to divx or xvid instead of regular full-blown dvd backups so that you can fit several movies onto a single dvd. of course, this suggestion is only plausible if you'll be watching these movies on a computer (or a dvd player that plays divx/xvid). if going this route would work for you, then look into using AutoGK to encode your movies for you pretty much automatically.

if you need to use regular dvd backups, dvdshrink is a free and popular solution.

Re: New user saying hello!

Thanks Az I can watch movies on the privacy of my laptop however dvds are very very popular over there. It would benefit all the other soldiers if they are in a standard dvd format. That way we can pass them around and show them at the USO when the soldiers get their downtime. I'm experementing this weekend trying to get this all figuered out. I hope with everyone's help I can get handle on this thing. Thanks again.

Hi!

I'm not sure if I posted in this thread yet - registered several weeks ago after I bought an NEC ND-3500A. Currently running the modified TDK 1616n firmware. Looking for some good media to use with this puppy

Edit: I guess I didn't post yet, "Posts 1" is a good clue.

Hi there. Ismellsmoke is in reference to both my culinary and dvd burning skills. I'm a newbie to the forum. I hail from the midwest and just upgraded my pc within the last year. I've been introduced to cd burning (which I got pretty easily) and just recently added a dvd burner (which is not going so well). I'm looking forward to discussing topics with all of you.
