Re: installing a sub

Start your research over here. There are a lot of free tools to do what you want. I don't really care about subtitles in my avis so i can't advise which is the best.

Thanks Alex
Questionable source, I'd say. Legal .avi files don't come with .SUB and .IDX files.

Re: installing a sub

If you just want to watch the video with the subtitles, install VSFilter and make sure the .avi, .sub and .idx files have the same name. Then play the avi in most any DirectShow-capable player.

If you want to "combine" the video and subs into a single file, probably the easiest way is to convert the subs into a frendlier format. Try SubRip to convert to a text format (.srt is fine) and mux the avi and srt files into a new container... I'd probably go with matroska (use mkvtoolnix to do this--really easy).

Have fun.

Re: installing a sub

After a little more reading Avisub looks like the simplest tool to use.
Quote:
AviSub is an freeware tool that can mux up to three srt/sub/txt or vobsubs/sub/idx subtitle streams in an avi file. Generates an *.divx file with embedded xsubs. Uses the latest tecnology of the Divx codec. You can watch yours DivX films with switchable subtitles on your DivX compatible DVD player ! The operation takes only 5 minutes!
You can get it here http://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=AviSub Look at the screenshot. From the looks of it you open the avi, add the sub file, pick the fonts and then process.

Actualy, that tool has very limited features (altough is very simple to use), and is questionable will it work. I know 'cause I found myself in front of a same problem. I solved it - take a look here.
