Image size problem?

Hi,
I've recently joined and, like neo, am overwhelmed by the amount of information to sift through here!

Being a painter (house, not pretty pictures) in sunny Australia, i don't really get the time to immerse myself in computer stuff as much as I'd like, so forgive me if I display my ignorance either technically or netiquette... ly... My apologies also if this exact problem has been addressed somewhere else in this forum - I haven't been able to locate it as yet.

Right, my problem is: I have been trying to back up my trusty "Swat 4" game, just to see if I can do it, and it turns out that, predictably, I can't. I used Philamber's post http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=126424 as a guide to start with (used the information located here somewhere to identify the protection as SecuROM 5.03.13.0082 - for some reason neither A-Ray or ProtectionID detected it?).

Anyhoozle, using Alcohol and A-Ray it all went fine until the patched image started burning (step 19 on philamber's list), when I got a message saying "write error - session aborted" or words to that effect. Tried a couple of times and got the same thing.

The original game disk size is 631MB, however the Alcohol 120% image turns out to be something like 770MB, and the patched image a bit more. My blank disks don't have the capacity written on them, but isn't it something like 700 or maybe 750MB max? Would this be the problem? And if so, is there a way around it?

The only other thing I can think of is that the guide says to use a blank cdr/w disk - I don't have any, so I've used cd-r. Is this not important, or the height of stupidity?

If it helps at all, I'm just using the trial version of Alcohol 120%, not the regular one. I haven't tried the cloneCD option as I don't own CloneCD. In case it may be the burner itself, I have a Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-110D.

Can't think of anything else. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
Mick
