How can I grab a clip from a DVD?

I want to grab just a short clip off of a movie on DVD, how can I do that? I assume the movie is copy protected, but I am using this for personal use (school project) anything I can do?

I am new to the DVD technologies but have been doing computer video editing for a few years (Adobe Premeire and similar.)

Perfect. Thanks. I am still deciding on a burner (and do not have a DVD-rom) so I cannot yet test the program.

Do you happen to know which formats DVD Decryptor will output? The web site says it makes DivX, but I assume they mean it can be converted with a third party program to DivX, no biggie, but I am trying to figure out what output formats are supported natively by DVD Decryptor.

Any way to watch them from the hard drive without making a DivX?

One more question, is there a way I can get just a section of a chapter, not the whole chapter?

Thanks all!

Double-click a VOB and watch it using your DVD software.

None that I'm aware of.

You can use VirtualDubMod to select a range but it cannot spit it out as MPEG2 so you have to re-encode.

One way to remove small sections from DVD movies is to use DVD Shrink. In the Re-author mode there is a start/end chapter select feature which allows you to trim away unwanted portions. just use the sliders to select the beginning and end of your clip. All you need to do then is back up whats left (your clip) to your hard drive. It will play just fine on your media player.

The original question was about trimming a section of a chapter, not a movie.
Otherwise, the same feature has been available in CloneDVD ( see below )

Thanks. I tried doing the re-author thing with DVD Shrink and it seemed to work. I burned only the "title 4" part and left everything else off.

But while the disc plays fine on my computer it does not play at all on my (just purchased) JVC XVN40BK dvd player.

Perhaps I need the menus? Any ideas? The player claims to support every common format (including CD+RW.)

With the method I described you can use the chapter select feature to first select a particular chapter where the scene you want resides, then you would move the start/end sliders to isolate that particular scene.

I use this method to remove scenes from various DVDs. They have been as short as 15 seconds or so. I noticed when doing this that I'm working with a resolution of about 14 frames.

Once this clip is selected, I usually just back it up to a folder. when I open the folder I'll find a VIDEO_TS, a VIDEO_TS_.BUP, a VTS_01_0, and a VTS_01_1.

The last scene I removed was from the movie "Aliens". I removed the portion where the space marines are getting ready to drop to the planet's surface. The scene was just a bit longer than "We're on an express elevator to hell, going down! wooohoo!" About 10 or 15 seconds.

Sorry about not getting your last post, ~~~, You don't need a menu, most of the DVDs I burn don't have menus. What method did you use to burn?

Newer versions of Shrink have a feature that allows "auto-burning" with either Nero or Decrypter.

For example if you wanted to use this feature using Decrypter to burn with:

When you have completed working with Shrink and are ready to back up your movie or clip, select "Backup! A window will open and you can select a target device. Select ISO disc image from the menu. Below that, tick the box that says "Launch DVD Decrypter to burn the output image". Just have a blank disc in your burner.
When you select OK, Shrink will encode the movie or clip and then when thats finished, it will launch Decrypter to burn the ISO image to your disc.
You do not have to open Decrypter at all. It just needs to be installed on your PC.

I figured out how to make the disc burn with DVD Shrink (no ISO, no usage of DVD Decryptor or Nero (is that the problem?),) and the disc works fine on my computer DVDRW, just not in my brand new JVC DVD player.

Is there any way to generate valid IFO (and any other necessary) files from a set of VOB files? I think that is the problem.

Someone I asked said CSS may be an issue, is that possible? The disc shows no copyright protection on it when it is analyzed in the programs.

Never mind, the problem was solved by switching to the CloneDVD trial. The same process worked flawlessly in CloneDVD.
