Hard drive copying

I have installed a new hard drive on my laptop and I want to transfer the old drive contents from the old drive ( still working but not installed ) to the new drive. I have a hp dvd burner with Nero software package. Using Nero Backitup software I have copied the data to 4 dvds successfully. When I go the reinstall the data it uses DOS program nrestore.exe and I can get it to start loading but it dies during the first disk. I have xp and I think that as the data loads it wipes out xp and the command interface. Can anyone give me some guidance or a better software or method to use?

Thanks

Re: Hard drive copying

There are several you can try, one of them being Norton Ghost.

Re: Hard drive copying

this is an excellent application for an external hdd enclosure. Does your laptop have usb or firewire ports?
