Majority of retail version of these converters have a trail period that give 2 to 4 weeks trail time. You can download those and use them for your temporary purpose.

I have, I've downloaded quite a few and I end up having to uninstall it. The trail version claims It'll only convert "5minites or 50%". My files are at least thirty minutes.

I've tired SUPER, which a lot of people claim to be good. (and It's free) It did one file for me, and then the rest it says "error" and won't convert.

But thanks for replying though, appreciated.

& can anyone recommend a decoder for winavi? If I have the decoder, I don't need the mp4 convert to avi. TIA!

For decoding install ffdshow and XviD. I believe ffdshow handles a wider variety of formats, but you can install both without any problems.

I was hoping this would actually work. But sadly, this is what happened.

failed assertion
pic->data [0]
at line 2175 of file h264.c

mplayer interrupted by signal 6 in module: decode:video

-mplayer crashed. this shouldn't happen.
please read bugreports.txt

This is driving me insane, I've downloaded probably over ten programs and none do the job for me. =( Sigh.

Re: Free MP4 to AVI converter

You can try these progams to see if they can help.

AVIcodec is a free multimedia file analyser for Windows which will tell you the codec required and where to download it.
http://avicodec.duby.info/

MediaInfo will do the same.
http://www.mediainfo.sourceforge.net

GSpot may be able to identify any problems with the MP4 file itself

Yes, I've tired on Real Player and VLC. Though, I can only hear it, I can't see nothing?

I even tired downloading other MP4 files, and it still doesn't work. This is so gay.

Re: Free MP4 to AVI converter

Just drag and drop the video file into AVIcodec's main window. At the bottom it will give you the particulars for the video and audio - it will say supported at the end if you already have the codec needed to decode them installed. If they're not supported click the "web" button to the right of the video particulars and it will open up a browser and take you to the website for the codec needed.

I can drag my AVI files but it won't let me drag MP4!

Re: Free MP4 to AVI converter

OH, .MP4 - I was reading that as MPEG4 and only thinking DivX or Xvid - sorry. MP4 is an Apple Quicktime extension. Installing the Quicktime player should give you the proper codecs.

If your file plays in VLC you can convert it to any other format VLC can handle. IDK if VLC does AVI containers, though.

Have you tried playing the MP4's with the Quicktime player? If they won't play, does it give any error message?

Re: Free MP4 to AVI converter

Here's something else you can try.

Download the MP4splitter from MediaPlayer Classic. Unzip it with the 7-zip archiver and place the "MP4Splitter.ax" file in your "C:\WINDOWS\system32" folder. Install it by going to "Start>Run" and typing in "regsvr32 MP4Splitter.ax" and clicking "OK".

MP4splitter direct download link:
http://superb-west.dl.sourceforge.ne...er_20050310.7z

Download the 7-zip archiver here:
http://www.7-zip.org/

While you're at it you might want to also download the FLVsplitter from MediaPlayer Classic, so you can decode FLV files as well. It's installed the same way as the MP4splitter. That is - place the "FLVSplitter.ax" file in your "C:\WINDOWS\system32" folder. Install it by going to "Start>Run" and typing in "regsvr32 FLVSplitter.ax" and clicking "OK".

FLVsplitter direct download link:

Yes, I have. And I can hear what they're saying, but I can't see it. =(

Same with RMVB files, I can't decode it, do you happen to know a decoder for that instead?

Which quality is normally better, MP4 or, RMVB files? and do you mind telling me what's the difference?

Re: Free MP4 to AVI converter

see if MPEG Streamclip works for you. Load your files into the program and then export to avi. Hopefully it works, i've only used it to join a few mp4 files.

Let's see if I can make it clearer then.

1. Download and install this software so that you will be able to unzip the type of zip file the MP4splitter comes in.
http://superb-east.dl.sourceforge.ne...nzip/7z442.exe

2. Download the MP4splitter zip file.
http://superb-west.dl.sourceforge.ne...er_20050310.7z

3. Double click on the MP4splitter zip file you just downloaded and it will be opened by the 7-Zip program you downloaded and installed in step 1.

4. Double click on the 'release' folder in the '7-Zip File Manager' window. Click on 'Extract' in the '7-Zip File Manager' toolbar and the 'Copy' box appears.

5. Click on the '...' button in the 'Copy' box and browse for the 'Windows' folder which will usually be found by clicking first on 'My Computer' and then clicking on 'Local Disk [C:]'.
When you find the 'Windows' folder, click on it and look for the 'system32' folder under it.
When you find the 'system32' folder, click on it to select it and then click on the 'OK' button at the bottom of the 'Browse For Folder' box.
This will place a copy of the 'MP4splitter.ax' file in your Windows/system32 folder.

6. The 'MP4splitter.ax' driver needs to be registered with the Windows Operating System so it knows it's there and can make use of it.
Click on the 'start' button at the bottom left corner of your desktop and then select and click on 'Run...'.
In the 'Run' box that opens up type: regsvr32MP4Splitter.ax and click 'OK'.
A 'RegSvr32' message box should pop up telling you "DllRegisterServer in MP4Splitter.ax succeded".

That's it. Play one your .MP4's and see if you're getting the video now.

Re: Free MP4 to AVI converter

Here's a download link for a small(about 7MB) MP4 clip I know works.
Try playing it to see if the problem is with playing MP4's in general or just the ones you have.

Correction: There needs to be a space between 'regsvr32' and 'MP4Splitter.ax' in when you type it in the 'Run' box in step 6.
