What do people mean when they say "I have \'flashed the firmware"? I am trying to update my DVD player so that it will burn, but I don\'t understand the terminology

Flashing the firmware means updating the firmware.
THe firmware is a small piece of software loaded into the chip of the DVD writer.

You cannot use it to turn a DVD player into a DVD recorder, that would also require hardware modifications (laser).
If you have a DVD recorder (burner) that does not burn, then you have a different problem...

Your burner is capable of burning CD and DVD+, not DVD-.
Check the disc you are trying to burn if it is the right one for your drive.
See if you can burn CD.
