It's a better idea to use Nero to burn .Iso files in my opinion.

thanx for the link!
But for burning any kind of file image, you can use Daemon tool, the virtual device! mount the image file (iso, nrg, ccd...) in daemon tools and to choose Cd burning on the fly, cd to cd!

idx

Anyone know anything more about extension "*.idx"? It is filling up "my documents" in its hundreds, and the extension website seems rather vague...?

Vobsub uses idx, it's the control file for the .sub. But I doubt you're unconsciously ripping DVD's to your My documents folder...
Do you use ICQ or Outlook Express?

No vob ripping, no ICQ, no Outlook Express. Perhaps related to Trillian though? - I use Trillian to access my ICQ, will try uninstalling and see what happens.

Been using Outlook and Trillian etc but never had more than a few idx files on my hdd.

Been doing some searching and all i ve come up with is that idx files can be used by the following apps:

IDX Relational database index (Microsoft Fox Pro)
IDX Relational database index (Symantec Q&A)
IDX Microsoft Outlook Express file
IDX Index file (Microsoft Clip Gallery v. 1.x)
IDX Index (various)
IDX Corel QuickFinder Information

+plus some DVD ripping proggies and antivirus software.

Found this link also:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/de...file_types.asp

Are there any other file types in addition to the idx files that copuld help you recognize the program that needs them?

Thanks for your suggestions Hemispasm - I don't use any of those programs. As long as it's not related to Nero or Alcohol, no cdfreak need freak I guess.
I just delete them in their hundreds like a sort of insect infestation in the kitchen, and they keep coming back.
Nothing is not working because of deleting them. But then you could say that about a lot of things in Windows.

.idx files are usually part of Outlook express.

Do you use newsgroups??
Certain ng apps will use idx file also, such as Agent or Newsbin pro. Do a search for .idx and tell me where there are hiding at

Nero's CD database (titles/artists/tracks) stores information in .idx files as well. In Nero, click "File"->"Preferences...", and then select the "Database" tab and see whether or not you have the "Use local Nero CD database" enabled (check mark in "Program database path:" or "User database path") and, if so, if the paths point to your My Documents folder where you are seeing all the files.

The bundled software, B's CLiP, that came with my Sony CRX 225E
burns a perfect .ISO every time. The interface is a doddle to use and I've not made a coaster to date. More than can be said for Nero 6.

I think I'll leave DVD burning till I take out a second mortgage

Re: File names - what the hell they are

ok......winrar is "THE" tool for compressed files, ie...files packaged for transport over the net....be it .zip, .rar, dot whatever.......but for native files......you'll need other tools, and each application you install will vie for ownership of that filetype plus others.

You need to read up on the specific file type......and make an informed decision.....else your likely to dload ACDCEE, and find your paint proggy of choice is no longer default for .jpg....

sounds dumb....but happend to me......LOL

isobuster is very good to rip .iso, .bin/cue.... unless you use daemon tools or alcohol 120% to create the virtual cd-rom.

Re: File names - what the hell they are

Is there a program for a good all around use no matter what ext. is used? I am having some issues with VTS "VTune Performance Monitor Project File (Intel)" right now. But there are many, so there must be a program that does most of them, ... right? I am new to this whole thing, I don't know spit about getting these to burn. Step by step the process teachs a new layer that will (hopfully) get me educated enough to start enjoying the hours of work figureing it all out.
